Folders on top in El Capitan

Since El Capitan killed XtraFinder and TotalFinder with Metal we need El Capitan to provide a solution to have Folders on top.

I was surprised that disabling SIP doesn't fix the problem re: XtraFinder & TotalFinder. 😢

I hate to say it, but ye olde Winblows File Explorer is a superior and more logical format for navigating your file structure - with it's Directory Tree Pane on one side of the window, and the Directory Contents view on the other. Finder on the other hand insists that your files and folders are logically the same thing which can be listed alphabetically.

Jumbling the logical structure and the content is nuts.

I don't care how good you think spotlight is, context is critical. Where the file is, is as important to what's in it.

I just submitted feedback to Apple. I doubt they will listen, I'm sure people have been requesting this for years to no avail. It is really unfortunate because I exclusively use Date Modified to sort files, and having the folders mixed in with files is borderline unusable. I tried for years to use OSX like this until I came across Totalfinder, which was a breath of fresh air. Now we're back to square one again. I wonder how many people try OSX, only to go back to Windows because of the infuriating way it organises files? All we want is an option.

To be fair, the command line ls (Unix) only supports sort by name, date and size, no directories first option.

However, what I find unbearable is that Apple stays mute on the issue in their own support forum. There was a time where one could hope to get a reply from Steve directly. Apple at least needs a feature/bug database with possibility to vote for.

Why do you find that "unbearable"? You signed up and read the Terms right? The ones that explain what the space is and how Apple don't communicate with people here. This is only Users talking to other Users. Having been told that, why Why on earth do you expect a response from Apple here?

On here? Never happened. The route to the developers is via the Feedback mechanism. Steve responded to a infinitesimal number of emails, and got great publicity for that. So does Tim Cooke, just gets less press. SO, you can hope. You've got exactly the same chance as every other email sender...

This is not the way out.

1. folders on top should be in any view. that's the crucial point.

2. folders should be first even when you sort by date modified because folders are the priority and files are not. There is a logic in that.

But, that means your preference would be forced on everyone. I'm not okay with that. I would agree, though, that folders on top, as an option would be very nice. I have some folders in which I have only a couple of files but hundreds of folders.

In actuality, I am very okay with the way Finder works, right now.

You misunderstand. We'd like the OPTION to be able to put folders on top. In other words, you could have finder work the way YOU like, and we could have finder work the way WE like. Obviously it would never default to folders on top, because so many people are used to it the way it is.

But I really do have to laugh when people suggest features then other people come in and go "no I don't want it to work like that!". That's why we're proposing an OPTION so people can use it however they like.
