Folders on top in El Capitan
Since El Capitan killed XtraFinder and TotalFinder with Metal we need El Capitan to provide a solution to have Folders on top.

I sent feedback as well.
Adding an ability to have such function is not hard thing to do. I also don't understand, why there is no "CUT", such thing I also was adding by XtraFinder.
I hope Apple Team is reading this, and they will suprise us in next updates 🙂
Thanks to all who sent your feedback about this issue to Apple. I kindly ask anyone who faces the same problem to send your feedback to Apple.
This is the only opportunity I guess to say our attitude towards the problem.
Again, I DO NOT ask to change politics of Apple in this question. All I (and I think I am not the one here) want is to HAVE AN OPTION to make folders on top in Finder.
I used to have this option via Extra Finder which was killed since El Capitan was introduced.
P.S.: Remember the best words of Steve Jobs when he came back to Apple:
"Since we believe in choice we’re going to be shipping other Internet browsers as well on the Macintosh and the user can of course change their default should they choose to (cheering), but uh, we believe that Internet Explorer is a really good browser (jeering) and we think it’s going to make a fine default browser."
Well, I did not find this to work at all. Arranging by name lists by name, whether a file or a folder. But, someone identified a simple solution that requires no tinkering with system files or any other software: just add a space in front of folder names, and all subfolders will list first, and all other files in that folder will continue to list in alpha order (which is what most users seem to prefer).
While I have never liked having folders on top like Windows does by default (I prefer alphabetical arrangement), for those who like folders on top, I would support having an option for that to happen.
Have you tried, under the View options for that folder to set it this way?
That puts the folders on top and sorts the remaining files by kind and by name.
And there is a way to activate XtraFinder in El Capitan and still have the SIP active. That's to partially disable SIP to allow code injection and keep the rest of it active:
Partially disable System Integrity Protection
Refer this Apple's article .
Follow these steps:
1. Boot to Recovery OS by restarting your machine and holding down the Command and R keys at startup.
2. Launch Terminal from the Utilities menu.
3. Enter the following command: csrutil enable --without debug
Reboot your computer.
Man, this is stupid. I finally installed El capitan and just finished installing XtraFinder to realize that the "folders first" view option is gone. I really wonder why Apple insist on keeping it this way. They could have simply gave us an option to list folders first.
The "list by type" isn't a good solution because it'll group everything depending on types.
This is a real bummer.
Not related but it's baffling why Apple insist on some things that doesn't make sense.
1. Keeping the boot up chime/noise. Then the apple defenders will come and tell us "no it's for your own good", "it's actually a genius engineering and it's designed that way", "follow the Apple way or beat it".
2. Why can't I have "external monitor only" without closing the lid of my rMBP13? The laptop heats up and closing the lid only helps building up the heat inside. Sure, I can turn the brightness way down, but that's not the same as what I'm asking for.
Anyways, I hope this 10.11.2 works better than the 10.10.3 Yosemite I tried last time but had to go back to 10.9.5 Mavericks.
The problem is that there are neither files on top nor folders on top. Folders are grouped (when sorted by kind) and then groups are sorted by name of kind. "Documents" are sorted before "Folders", whilst "Images" are sorted after folders. I could understand the alphabetic order of group by kind sorting, if searching would then search for group names first. So if I type "Folder" I would jump to the "Folder" group. But that isn't so. It finds the first file starting with "folder" (whatever the type is of that file). Another issue is the Desktop. Sorting by kind sorts first Drives, then Aliases (to folders or files), then Documents. Breaking with the logic in Finder. It also organises from the right to the left âš Who came up with that idea or why is there no option to change that b behaviour?
Whilst the current implementation has some sort of logic, it is absolutely none intuitive (which the discussion here shows clearly) nor is it user friendly.
Why is it not intuitive? Because it is a file system utility. Files are organised in drives, folders and sub-folders. I never heard of or saw a physical filing system where subfolders are not the first thing presented as an option do dig down the organisational tree (Room->Cabinet->Drawer->Folder by First Letter...and finally files). In a good organised file structure, there are also always a few folders compared to eventually large number of other files/filetypes.
But then again, maybe I'm just too old fashioned.
Guys, one more thing that I noticed, and forgot to mention earlier. Sorry, but it's little off-topic. But I think it fits in this subject.
Have You noticed, that searching by pressed letter is not working well ?
I mean, let say, You have a folder with many items inside. Folders, images, other files. You click one file, and press "D" letter, so You can jump on every file named starting from "D". Sometimes it's just not working, it's not finding other files even they are there. You have to look for them manually.
That doesn't work.
There was actually a way in older OSX versions to achieve this without naming every folder with a space. However, this doesn't seem to be correct anymore...
it's just such a simple one thing. I hope Apple is reading this, and they will surprise us with next update 🙂

Apple doesn't read these forums. It's strictly a user-to-user community. All you can do is leave feedback and hope enough people have left feedback about the same thing. Apple will not respond personally to the feedback, but they have taken things under advisement and made changes when enough people complained.
I already did that. I just hope other will follow me as well. That's not a big deal for Apple to put in next release... they should do it.
The Apple OS has, in various forms and versions, had 30 years to implement this feature. They have never done it. They're very unlikely to implement this is a point update, if ever. It's always been a 3rd party solution. So, don't hold your breath and go find a 3rd party solution.
I think the best way is to send feedback but let the public know that this is a top priority issue for the next update by posting its attitude towards the problem.
If you have more ideas how to petition Apple or attack attention to the problem let me know.
But the recipe is simple: Send your feedback to apple with this theme's title. copy / paste a link to it. and copy your feedback here.
