Can't erase CD-RW's since installing el capitan.

Since I installed el cap on my Macbook Pro several days ago I am not able to erase CD-RW's. That option is grayed out. I also tried to do this on my wife's Macbook Air with an external Super Drive with the same results. This is something I do every weekend and have for years. Any ideas?

Probably because it is DISK Utility and not HARD DISK Utility. The mounted DISK and optical drive appear there but there are no operations that you can perform, everything except Info is greyed out. In the past these functions were available in Disk Utility. Other RAID related hard disk functions were also removed and only available now from a shell - I guess they were deemed 'too dangerous' for users of the mortal variety to comtemplate. The fact that this thread exists at all seems to support my comment.

Wrt your 'dust bin' statement, despite Apple's apparent disdain for optical media they are still in common use and will continue to be for a while. Things like storage media by their nature tend to have a very long tail of use.

But almost none of the functions are relevant. The only thing in common is Erase if it is a CD/RW. Other than that, you don't partition a CD, you don't repair a CD, and you don't make a RAID out of a CD.

No, they just couldn't get that rolled into the initial release of the new version of Disk Utility. It is available in Sierra.

Why is it you get to have an opinion, based purely on desire, but I can't have one based on logic?

All other functions of Optical technology are in the Finder. Why bury one process in an app that has little to do with the whole process?

You claimed the new method is not intuitive, but I see it as entirely more intuitive than opening a completely irrelevant app to accomplish a single task while all other relevant tasks are handled in the Finder.
