iphone 6s camera lag

I’m experiencing an issue with my iPhone 6s where the camera app is sometimes very laggy when starting up. Most of the time things are fine – I open the camera app and instantly see images from the rear camera. However, on occasion I will get either the last photo taken showing or (more often) see really slow updates (like a frame a second) from the camera for 5-6 seconds before it becomes usable. I haven’t seen anything online about others experiencing this issue, so it would be good to know if this is an isolated hardware issue or something others are seeing (and likely to be fixed by a future software update). FWIW I have done a complete restore on the phone via iTunes without the issue being solved.

Thinking about Robber80 data I've come up with an idea.

Apparently it seems that the problem is in the icloud backup/options since it has been transfered from Robber80 to his wife.

On the other hand I'd say that some people tried clean installs with no success so this is somehow unexpected.

But there is one more thing that he has changed: SIM Card!

Considering that the lag appears after a call (use of sim card) is not a crazy idea. And it will explain why some people even coming from a clean install with no restore have the problem over and over again!

Robber80, could you please do a very simple and quick test? Keep both iPhones with their configurations, but just swap SIM cards. Then redo the test... And then check if the one that fails is your data+her SIM card or her data+your SIM card.

Sorry if I am asking too much but after a year I feel that we are close to fix this issue...

In my case, I have a Movistar Spain SIM card which is actually a pretty old one that I cut to microSIM size. Unfortunately I don't have any other microSIM to try..

Anyone else with old SIM cards? Same company?

Thanks a lot!

Having both the 6S plus and the 7 is great for test purposes. What I would do is to simply reset both phones. Give your wife her plus back :-) But do not restore any backups to either phone.

Just for the purpose of the test, set up both as new phones with just stock apps. Once the phones activate, you will have your phonebook intact. Then repeat the test. My guess is that the fault will still be there. Which would mean that the backup is not carrying the problem.

Ok, so i did a few more tests. So far i'm more confused than anything. This is what i did:

I have now restored the phones back to their correct user backups. My wife's back up on her 6s plus and my back up on my 7.

So here is the crappy news.... BOTH phones now do the camera freeze. Its crazy, I tested my wife's phone over 50 times before i did all of the back up/ restores that I did for the above testing. Also when they were swapped (my back up on my wife 6s plus and her back up on my 7) i couldn't get my 7 to freeze with 20 plus tests. But my wife 6s plus would freeze like crazy with my back up.

Also after i did a full reset on both phones i tried the test setting them up new. (i did have to put my iTunes user name and password to get them to fire up) Both phones did not do the camera freeze after around 20 tests that were exactly as described above .

I switched the sim cards. still the same results. No camera freeze while both phones were wiped clean

I then proceeded to load my back up back on my 7 and my wife's backup on here 6s plus.

Now both phones camera freeze after a few phone calls.... I'm not a rocket scientist but i'm pretty sure i made things worse lol

Hi Robber80.

What a mess. But maybe and only maybe it is related with my previous hint.

So you inserted your SIM in her iphone before loading her backup. What if there is something crappy in the sim card/ carrier settings that mess the whole thing up? Even if you exchange it later.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that there is some sw/fw installed along your sim card.

So it could be that something that it has been installed when you have put your SIM conflicts with the phone when it is fully running your icloud backup.

Yes, I know. It is not a very solid theory, but your case is so strange anyway.

To fix it, you could do a full reset with her sim card and then her backup. No contact with your SIM or backup that can contaminate hers. Hopefully it will work fine again and somehow we'll have a clue.

Otherwise and considering that the backup has not been changed (is it an iTunes one instead of an icloud one) I don't understand anything...

Thanks for your help!!!

@Robber80,

To sum everything up what you have reached so far:

1. Initially, you had the lag on your 7, and your wife did not on her 6s.

2. You did a full reset (delete iphone) on both devices. Then restored your wifes backup to your iphone 7, and your own backup you have restored to your wife's 6s.

3. After this there is no lag on your 7, whereas there is a lag on your wife's 6s.

4. Then, you did a full reset (delete iphone) on both devices and set them up as new. No lag is present on both devices, even if in this step (after a full reset) the sim cards were switched.

5. In this step, after you made sure via numerous tests that both devices do not exhibit any lag, you switched the sim cards back to their original iphones.

6. Then you uploaded the backups (without resetting the iphones) to their original iphones (i.e. your backup to 7, your wife's backup to 6s).

7. There is the same lag on both devices, the length of the lag etc. is the same.

Please make corrections, precisions or additions to the above steps, if there is anything else. It is very important that we know the particular sequence that led to lag disappear and appear again (now on both devices). This will help with further investigation.

You have a very special case and only you have reached a great progress and gave hope to the affected users. Maybe together we will solve it. Now it is important be able to precisely recreate the steps that led to lag disappear.

Please also make sure that you do not delete/lose the backup of your wife, which you have created before doing all the tests. Maybe save it somewhere. The iphone backups are stored under: Mac HD/Users/username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. That backup of your wife, that solved the issue on your iphone 7 can be the key.

@nazemg

Could you please describe what you did to get rid of the lag in your case, if you were able to? Or how other devices have gained the lag after being linked to your icloud? Did the lag on those devices disappear when unlinked from your icloud? Please give us more details.

@all

I gave it a chance again and resetted my iphone 7 (delete iphone) and installed as new, also did DFU, also with a completely new user (created new apple id), nothing helped unfortunately. What I still would like to test is to activate my iphone as new with the new sim card.

dimascer, What you described was the exact steps i took. The back up for my wife phone is the same one that i just put back on her phone.

two points of interest:

1. I'm not hooked up to iCloud on either device.

2. the lag started on my wife's phone (Remember it had no lag on the camera, even when i used her back up and put it on my iPhone 7 still no lag. ) when, and this may be a complete coincidence, i was going through the settings like was suggested above. The only setting i could find that was different was WIFI Assist. My iPhone 7 which has lag, and my work phone iPhone 6s has lag both had WIFI assist on. I my wife phone did not have WIFI assist on. But during the tests i wasn't really getting lag on her phone. Then i switched on the WIFI assist on hers. I started getting lag.

Now this could be that the phone had lag before i switched on the WIFI Assist. I just didn't notice it because i hadn't did a full test which was my mistake. I had only made 1 or two phone calls really quick and then stumbled on that option being different.

I tried turning the switch back off, even powered down and reset the phones in varies ways with the switch off. this did NOT help. they both have the lag.

I'm only bringing it up because it was the only difference i could see between the two.

Ok, thanks for the information. Could you please, if possible, find that particular backup of your wife, which has eliminated the issue on your iphone 7? It will be helpful if you could do the procedure once again and see if your iphone 7 has the lag with the "good" backup of your wife on it.

If your iphone 7 will not have any lag in this case, we will move into the direction of backup investigation.

If your iphone 7 continues to have the lag, even with the proper backup of your wife, we can move into the direction to investigate other things (like carrier, wifi assist, etc) that could have possibly influenced the camera behavior.

Thank you!

Hi Again.

Just to discard or going forward. What about your sim cards? Are you in the same carrier as your wife?

and sim cards are new? Old? Very old?

in settings general i have my carrier version. In my case movistar 25.0

ALso in phone settings I have some carrier specific sim applications, useless

but who knows if they are harmful. And also some carrier services.

Some basic explanation. http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-to-access-the-SIM-card-applications-and-servi ces-on-iPhone_id56981

Maybe this code is messing it. It may have contaminated your wife's iphone when you put

your sim.

Maybe.

This could be an interesting theory. To go into this direction, first I would suggest to ask Robber80 to repeat the procedure with master reset and upload a backup of his wife to his iphone 7 (that particular backup that eliminated the issue on his iphone 7). If that helps again, we move further.

By the way, I use Fonic german carrier, that uses o2 network. I have bought today a prepaid sim of T-mobile, that operates in its own network, did the master reset and dfu, without using any apple id, the problem persists.
