external hard drive now read only after el capitan update

After updating to El Capitan yesterday, my toshiba external hard drive is now only giving me permission to "read only". How do I fix this? I have wedding photos I need to be able to access to edit!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11)

sorry ur answer isn't absolute correct, if that is case you shouldn't able read either.

Sorry, your rebuttal is absolutely wrong. OS X has had read capability on NTFS volumes for quite some time (as long as I can remember). It has never had native write support for NTFS. I imagine it would require some licensing agreement to be able to write, but I'm not certain.

A file system isn't an ecosystem. Apple has been running a variant of HFS since 1985. Microsoft created NTFS in 1993 in order to fix the problems inherent in their previous single-user, non-network file system that ran Windows up until that point.

If your drive was formatted as NTFS and the drive manufacturer nefariously convinced you to install software to use the drive, then your problem is primarily caused by the manufacturer of the hard drive, and partly your fault for not knowing you should format every drive you purchase prior to use.

Barney - I do not think you really read my post. I had said everything worked well before I updated to El Capitan. I had access to all my external hard drives for read and write. I should not have to reformat after an upgrade.

Actually I contacted Apple directly and they walked me through the fix.

All that I needed to do was to update Paragon - no reformatting necessary.

I believe the below link might help others. Lets keep the fixes simple, no formatting to lose data, etc.

And you didn't read this entire thread. The reason it worked before was because the third-party software you had installed made the OS capable of writing to NTFS which it is not natively capable of doing. That software was incompatible with El Capitan, so it needed an update.

You don't have to reformat, but if you don't, you will have to go through this process every upgrade as the crappy software will most likely break again. If you use OS X's native file system, you won't have that problem again.

I feel like screaming. Every day there is a new problem to fix either on my mac, my printer or my house. I waste HOURS !!!! I should really be invoicing these companies for wasted time.

So, I too have an external hard drive (Toshiba) which worked very well until I upgraded to El Capitan. I keep my itunes library on it and hence use it to back up my iphone. My iphone is now full and I really need to download photos and back it up . But, the drive is locked and there is no where to edit the permissions under "Get Info". I transferred the contents temporarily to another drive, then installed the Tuxera software that came with the drive that makes the drive editable on a mac. Now I just get nothing - it won't even show up on my desktop. I get this error message which I hope you can see in attached photo.

No idea what to do now - desperately need to get it going again. Have wasted hours on this !! User uploaded file

If you don't use the drive on a Windows computer, there is no need to use the Windows file system.

Remove the incompatible version of Tuxera that you installed and use Disk Utility to Erase the drive. Use OS X Extended (Journaled) as the Format.

If you need to use it on a Windows computer, then get the current version of the software that works with El Capitan and continue to deal with this problem whenever the OS is updated.

My imation HD came with some paragon software which used to work fine, until I installed El Capitan.

From this point I could no longer write to the HD, so I retried the paragon software that came with it. However, when I had installed it and restarted my mac, the imation HD didn't come up. It wasn't recognised.

After a long night trawling through forums, I figured I would try to find the paragon software and delete it.
I searched, but found no files containing paragon.
Thankfully I came across a how-to uninstall paragon forum, which told me where the files were in sequential order. Once I deleted them, i unplugged my imation HD and put it back in - and - wa la, it appeared once again. I also managed to find a free download of NTFS software, which helps.
