external hard drive now read only after el capitan update

After updating to El Capitan yesterday, my toshiba external hard drive is now only giving me permission to "read only". How do I fix this? I have wedding photos I need to be able to access to edit!

I'm not sure what you are trying to install, but I can guarantee it will not provide you any help as it was written for Windows.

If your drive is formatted NTFS and Toshiba cannot provide you with a functional driver to write to NTFS, then you will need to copy the files to another location and reformat the drive to be usable on your Mac. NTFS is only barely useable if you install third-party hacks.

I have a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB. After downloading and installing Paragon Driver for Mac OS from

http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/ba ckup-plus-desk-mac/

I am successfully back up and running with Write access. No issues.

Am just posting this as the URL is slightly different from muzikT70 (I am, after all, encountering this 6 months later on). Thanks everyone... we all appreciate the frustration of things not working when we think we're doing the right thing by keeping up-to-date with OS.

I too have a Toshiba HDD which went to read-only after upgrading to El Capitan. I followed the discussion on this thread, I went to Tuxera, paid my money and got my hard drive working again. Thanks to all the contributors.

My particular complaint is this:

We pay a premium for Apple products. It is not good enough for Apple to say 'not our problem' when they must have known that hundreds of thousand of their customers would be affected by an upgrade.

Apple should work with the major device manufacturers to make sure that THEIR customers won't be inconvenienced when they install 'recommended' upgrades. They're Apple after all. It's not as if device manufacturers won't return their calls.

We pay a premium for Apple, as I said. Every time something like this occurs, it makes that premium just a little less worthwhile.

They already do that. They provide the betas to developers so that they can patch their software prior to the OS release. the drive manufacturers chose to do nothing instead.

There is also no reason to use their software. Just format the drive for use on your Mac and it will always work.

I had a Paragon software on my MacBook Pro prior to El Captain and it worked fine. Once I upgrade to the new system it wouldn't mount one Lacie Desktop Hard drive nor give me permission to write on another. I purchase a new license of Paragon and both drives works immediately. DO NOT DO THE TRANSFER THE DATA AND REFORMAT... there is no need. Just buy the software for NTFS... I guess with mac computer we don't buy anti-virus software but you have to buy additional software to access your own files...

Here is how to make your drive read and writable without any formatting to the drive. try this first.

  1. On your Apple computer, connect an NTFS-formatted drive to an external port. Take note of the volume name, as you'll need it later.
  2. Launch Terminal.app and type in the following command, entering the admin password when prompted (Figure A).
    sudo nano /etc/fstab
    Figure A

This will open the fstab file that is blank by default. Now, using the volume name, enter the following command (Figure B).

LABEL=VOLUME_NAME none ntfs rw,auto,nobrowse (EXAMPLE.....LABEL = DRIVE NAME_WD none ntfs rw,auto,nobrowse

Then just press enter......(DONE) 🙂
