El Capitan Bugs: USB Ports Not working + Shut down / Restart Problems

Since I updated to El Capitan, a couple of big issues:

1) My USB ports are not working properly. My superdrive won't get any power, so can't load any CDs. My USB mic (which worked fine with Yosemite) shows briefly as connected, and then immediately drops off. External hard drives, strangely, seem to work ... if intermittently. Huge problems here as I need to use my mic and CD drive, etc.

2) I can't shut down nor restart! When I try, the screen clears the desktop except for the background image, and then... nothing. I have to reboot and shut down manually by holding the power button every time.

This is on a mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina.

I've reset the P Ram, I've reset the SMC, I've cleared my login items, and I've done a second clean re-install of El Capitan.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Similar problems. Mid 2014 MBP retina. One usb port seems fine. The other one will charge my phone but plugging in a usb device via one particular usb cable gets nothing. That cable is my work horse in the studio as it's 20 feet long and I can use it for programming my power amp and my Eventide H9 without moving them around. That cable will work fine in the other usb port though. And all my usual short usb cables seem to work in both. Obviously I can just use the second port with the long cable but why is this ? Makes no sense to me.

A lot of issues here as well. It's a brand new MBP 13 Retina. My USB 3.0 SD card reader (Transcend) didn't work the first time I tried it. I rebooted and it was working fine. Now I have 2 USB 3.0 HDD cases (Icy Box) and one seems to be faulty (but the HDD did mount few times), even causing kernel panics. The other seemed ok. But it also caused a single kernel panic. This evening the HDD wasn't mounting anymore. Nor it is now. Actually nothing is mounting via USB 3.0 while the other USB 2.0 HDD I have is mounting fine.

This are the kind of messages I get in the console filtered by USB:

Currently attaching an USB 3.0 HDD I don't even get a logging message. Which means I'll have to reboot to have a chance to get the USB 3.0 HDD mounted..

Well, this is crazy. The HDD connected using the "working" USB 3.0 case was performing poorly. The one in the other USB 3.0 case wasn't loading at all. I tried connecting the first via an USB 2.0 hub and it was working fine. After disconnecting it from the 2.0 hub and attaching it normally to the MBP now all my USB 3.0 devices are immediately recognized! Even the one in the USB 3.0 case that was malfunctioning. I still have to reboot (too many things running at the moment), an update will follow.

Screw this, it went from bad to worse. El Capitan totally wiped out an USB 3.0 disk! Fortunately it was a backup of a backup. This using the USB case that with the other disk didn't give many problems apart from not showing the disk a couple of times (well, and a kernel panic once). Unless it doesn't like the Hybrid HDDs. Whatever. Back to the USB 2.0 HDD cases. What a mess and what a shame. Not to mention the waste of time (and some data).

Oh, well, I made an Yosemite installation and tested, they still didn't work fine. I reached the conclusion that both the new USB 3.0 cases (Icy Box for reference. Avoid them, it's better be safe than sorry.) are faulty in a big way. Fortunately Amazon UK has been kind enough to give me the refund without even sending them back. I'd love to see if they work with a Windows PC at this point. Still something is wrong with OSX. No matter what we attach the kernel shouldn't panic.

I bought a new MBP 13" 2 weeks ago and my external hard drive WD My Passport for Mac stopped being recognized on my new MBP on any of the USB ports, but would work fine on my old water damaged MBP (does not have El Capitan OS); iPhone would not connect each time connected via USB on new MBP as well. I bought a new external hard drive to test and rule out external hard drive as reason and again the USB ports stopped recognizing the new external hard drive. After 20 hours on with Apple Care I was advised to return the laptop for a new one which I did...same thing happened again yesterday with new MBP and new external hard drive. I've also experienced issues with my Canon printer connecting; scanner drivers were fine hard wired, but cannot figure out how to connect wirelessly yet. I've talked to at least 8-9 senior advisors at AC and only 2 of them have wanted to reinstall the OS...others had no idea of this issue with El Capitan or suggestions other than to return for a new MBP. Very, very frustrating.

Has anyone found a solution to El Capitan recognizing USB ports or resolving printer issues? I'm so disappointed Apple will not recognize this as a "consistent" issue and fix it...believe me I've addressed this issue to both the store and AC.
