After updating to El Capitan, all of the photos I added to a project that I was working on goes black when reviewing the video.

I updated to El Capitan in the middle of working on an iMovie project using iMovie 11. After the update, any photo that I had brought in from iPhoto will go black when reviewing my project video.

Me too - and I had other sound issues with Soundflower and Adobe Audition CS5.5 that I've now resolved.

Not the first time I've upgraded my OS X and software has stopped working. I need to get cracking with my iMovie project! Please fix, Apple! And my trust, again of downloading the latest OS X has been damaged.

To mekanic1:

Where the iMovie-files are in iMovie 9.0.4:

Seach for the file "iMovie Projects.localized", typically called "iMovie Projects". You should find it under your user name in Finder. It you use folders inside iMovie you will then find the rcproject-files under your folder. Then you can right-click on these files and show package content.

I suspect that in El Capitan something has been changed with the internal package file structure. So Apple, please launch a bug fix to El Capitan to fix this. Any other suggestions?

Hi @Malvinfromstavanger

I have located my project file and click show package contents. The below are the folders/files that I see:

Project (text edit doc)

QuickLook (Folder)

- Thumbnail (Jpeg)

Still images (quicktime movie)

Still thumbnails (text edit doc)

Can I do anything with these files to continue working with my file and see my images??

Cheers

Todd

Locating and seeing the content of the iMovie Library will not solve the problem. I.e. my post from Nov 3, is only for information. Please note that that is only valid for iMovie 9.0.4 (and maybe other versions of iMovie 9). But the also people with iMovie 10 have problems after updating to El Capitan.

I think that this is a bug introduced by Apple in El Capitan. So Apple, please solve this.

Best and fastest fix I found - Lucky enough to have an external bootable clone of my Yosemite install - just connected USB external, booted using option key and then everything works fine with iMovie. Even though I found a work around for the black still pictures when doing a new project taking a video screen capture of the still image - there is no fix for all the other breaks in iMovie 9.09 like the crashes when adding text to clips and some others. So until Apple fixes the problem which they may not do for an old version of iMovie, the only workable fix I found was the boot from external Thumb drive with Mavericks or Yosemite or from a bootable backup of either OS.

I have a time machine connected to my iMac..........could you tell me (detailed steps please) how I could revert back to OS Yosemite and hopefully that will restore my iMovie 9.0.4 back to no more black stills! I am not that familiar with the procedures on reverting to previous versions of a program and I am not sure if I have to revert everything that was backed up or can I just revert back to Yosemite and everything will be as it was then?

Thanks

Is there anyone out there that has been able to work with El Capitan and iMovie 9.0.4 without the black still problem? I upgraded to iMovie 9.0.9 and still the same problem. I also noticed that while skimming the video clips, they show upside down.

As others have noted, I reverted back to my previous OS and all is fine. But I love the features of El Capitan.

PLEASE APPLE - COME TO OUR AID!!!

I REALLY don't like iMovie 10. It's much like the old iMovie HD and Final Cut. But iMovie 9 is much more intuitive.

I am among the users of iMovie '11 (version 9.0.9) that have projects that have been corrupted after upgrading to El Capitan. I upgraded to 10.11.2 today and the problem still exists, that is, still shot thumbnails appear in the timeline window of the project but are now black screen images in the project browser. I believe I can import the project into the new version of iMovie but find the keystroke editing of the 9.0 version to be so much easier to use. I will be making a duplicate of the project file and try importing it into iMovie 10.0

Please Apple fix this problem.

After updating to El Capitan, all of the photos I added to a project that I was working on goes black when reviewing the video.
