iPhoto Update on El Capitan.

Hi,

I just updated to El Capitan and iPhoto keeps trying to update in App Store and ends up saying "This item is temporary unavailable". Good. No Problem. Am very happy and comfortable with the new "Photos App". This is my question. I WANT TO REMOVE THE IPHOTO APP OR NOTIFICATION FROM THE APP STORE OR UPDATE LIST FOR EVER.

Thanks and any answer for me?

Move any copy of iPhoto you are still having installed to a backup drive. Delete the installed iPhoto from the Applications folder. Restart the mac. You will see the update alert as long as Spotlight is showing iPhoto as installed on your Mac.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Terence,You have helped me before. I am disabled and need clear concise instructions. Have Macbook Pro 13" retina mid 2014. Upgraded to El Capitan and have these problems.

1. Safari works - however will not open Facebook at all. But keep getting little messages flashing up from Facebook.

2. When I do a sync using the lead from MacBook Pro to Ipad (3rd Gen) Wi Fi, IOS 9.1 two things happen:

* the ipad flashes on and off and on and off (not turning on and off, more flickering screen)

* it initially wants me to starts Photos which I haven't been using. Using iPhoto rarely just for odd photo.

Can you help me please? I don't know how to fix this problem, and am sure it is fixable, but just don't know how to.

Thanks Terence,

Belinda

Hi Terence,

In Australia, sorry for delayed reply. Finally at midnight Oz time I got facebook working. See below. Still have other two problems.

* Figuring ipad lead connector not right. Will try husband's lead, but twisted ankle last night when I got up so more disabled now than I was!

* Keeps asking me to consolidate Photos when I to go sync? I don't use Photos, use iPhoto's for minor adjustments then export them out. I'm happy to use Photo's now it has geotagging (so I've being told).

Scared to consolidate as don't understand what it means, and don't want all my photo's on there. I just want to use it as an editing tool if necessary then export photos elsewhere to external drive.

*Facebook solution : Uninstalled extensions (3 - pinterest, pocket and adblock). Read to leave Adblock off.

Had Malware application - uninstalled that, well hope I have - as understand that is no longer required.

Shut computer down, turned it on, and it worked. I didn't uninstall, but did put in rubbish bin.

Facebook have no message, just a blank page.....with a little bit of a white square on the left hand side of the screen.

Problem solved with Facebook now, thank goodness.

Thanks so much Terence,

Belinda

Well this is where you learn an important lesson. It is most unwise to use a computer - any brand or OS, it doesn't matter - without a back up. It's also difficult to see how you can call these photos "priceless" when you don't bother with the most basic form of protection for them.

What happens when you try use the Photo application?

i understand. i am quite bad with computers and i have surely learnt my lesson, as i am completely heart broken.

i am trying now relaunch photos holding down the option button and selecting another photo library to see if that will bring my photos back.

i was using an old OS and when my iphone 5s was stollen over the weekend i bought a iphone 6 when i plugged the new phone in to put all my previous setting and data on it said that i must update my operating system to sync this phone.

i was hesitant to update the system but did it anyway.

then when it opened the only photos that have remained on the computer are ones that were taken with my iphone or pics that were from the internet or social networks.

i have lost all my albums of photos taken with a canon ios camera.

I found this answer when I googled about the same problem. Worked for me and it only took a few minutes

In Finder, browse to your Photo folder and then to the location of your original iPhoto library. Select 'Open With' and chose Photos (not iPhoto). It then opens a window saying 'Preparing Library' (I think it may have done this when I first upgraded in which case it may well fail, but I'm giving it another go).

- So far I could not get answers whether Photos can do "Batch Change", resizing set of photos, watermarking ...

what was available in iPhoto and in Aperture. In fact, the answer is NO.

- Right now neither iPhoto nor Aperture can run on El Capitan, since no updates are available at all. (maybe on torrent)

- Apple issued a product which does not cover several functions even if it offers some improvements in the clouds

In the past years there were several annoying steps that ignored thousands of users, some of them:

PowerPC apps , iTunes features removed, now Photos ...

What next?

For those who surf and chat only it is not a big deal, but there are plenty of advanced users who need to spend days or weeks to get rid of

all the problems Apple creates with new OS versions.

You seem confused.

Photos can do batch changing, can resize sets of images on export (in exactly the same way as both iPhoto and Aperture). Watermarking was never available in iPhoto, but, like iPhoto can be done via a 3rd party app in Photos.

Both iPhoto and Aperture can run on El Capitan, if they are updated, and yes, people update them every day. The directions are available all over this forum. I'e personally posted then hundreds of times. They're even in this very thread.

Apple offered a product that is different from iPhoto but does about 99% of what iPhoto did - though sometimes in different ways. It also offers much more powerful editing tools and, of course, the iCloud features.

I'm not sure what the rest of your post refers to, and I wonder at its relevance.
