iOS 9 app backup

I noticed that after the iOS 9 update, apps aren't synced back to iTunes anymore.

If I have to perform a clean install of my phone, how do I sync my apps? I've tried to restore an iTunes backup but apps weren't synced, the only way was to manually search and download them from the App store. I don't think iCloud backup will work either.

Any ideas?

Thank you

With iOS 9 apps don't seem to be copied back, possibly due to a new feature for developers that has/is being rolled out

The App Store and operating system optimize the installation of iOS, tvOS, and watchOS apps by tailoring app delivery to the capabilities of the user’s particular device, with minimal footprint. This optimization, called app thinning, lets you create apps that use the most device features, occupy minimum disk space, and accommodate future updates that can be applied by Apple. Faster downloads and more space for other apps and content provides a better user experience.

An iCloud backup and restore should work (for those apps etc that are still in the store ; tones and audiobooks won't be redownloaded by an iCloud restore).

For an iTunes restore you will need to redownload the apps on your computer's iTunes so that they are in the Apps part of your library, that is where the restore will look to pick them up from

As long as the apps are still in the store, and the apps contents are selected to be backed up (Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > 'device'), then an iCloud restore should redownload them, their content, and your app folders/homescreen layout (plus your iTunes purchased music, films, TV shows, assuming that they remain in the store ; audiobooks and tones won't redownload, they are one-time only downloads).

This page lists what is included in an iCloud backup : iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview

You should still be able to sync music and photos from your computer - I backup to both my computer and iCloud and don't have any problems syncing.
