iPhones 6S Plus Earpiece Crackling When on Call

Has anybody with a new S noted a "crackling" or resonance noise when you are on phone calls especially with your earpiece (not speakerphone) volume set to 75% or higher? It seems to occur mostly if the person on the other end of the line speaks louder than usual or raises their voice. It's almost as though the metal grill inform of the the earpiece is vibrating from excess sound coming through or that it's loose.

At first I though it was a blown earpiece speaker but I noticed I was able to resolve it even at 100% volume by turning ON the Hearing Aid feature under General>Accessibility menu selection. BUT it makes the caller on the other end sound bass heavy and there is zero treble and makes them sound muffled.

So it's either bad earpieces or software. Any ideas?

Since I don't have Apple store in my country, I am thankful for your effort and for keeping us updated. So basically, Apple told you they are aware of the problem and next software is going to fix this bug? So that would be 9.3? Also, when I enable hearing aid, my problem is completely gone but then my calls are too quiet and I don't hear people I am speaking to very well.

Further to my last entry, I have installed the latest software (9.3) on my iPhone 6s plus (26th March 2016) and predictably, the crackling over the earpiece speaker has not improved at all. (I don't find this surprising and this only reinforces my opinion of the technical support staff who so far have been unable to offer any sensible advice and appear unwilling to accept there is a real problem.)

I would have to conclude that the software contained no modification to speaker drivers or signal amplifiers etc and that the original problem is most likely a hardware one.

With regard to your comment on low sound volume through your own phone's earpiece, I had wondered if Apple would attempt to reduce the volume as this sort of software change could reduce the crackling / speaker distortion with lower power. Maybe the power has been reduced on your phone which could be why you are complaining about not hearing your callers very well. (My best guess ???)

At present I cannot see how the 6s Plus situation will ever be resolved and I would now be most wary about any future Apple purchases.

In my opinion, if a hardware fault cannot be rectified at the original development stage, the idea of shipping a faulty product suggests an arrogant attitude to the market as it would not make any sense to take corrective action at a later date as this would effectively mean recalling or replacing every item previously shipped.

Overall, this is the worst mobile handset I have ever owned in terms of audio quality. This includes a number of brands over a wide budget range including many Motorola, Nokia, Samsung Sony and LG products among others. (Apple is anyone listening? This is meant to be a PHONE!)

If anyone has any other ideas on this I would interested to hear and a reply from any Apple Representative would be particularly appreciated. (I am not expecting the latter will happen.)

Hello,

I have 6S and updated to 9.3.1. The issue still persists. I started to get ****** of this phone, it has a slight issue with the display too. The upper part of the display has slightly lower backlight and when I brought it to apple repair center they told me that it is normal and if they replace it the next one will be the same.

This is shame to Apple, you can't make so expensive premium phone having such silly issues. The only thing that makes me buy an iPhone now is iOS. If I can get used to Android, I will buy the cheaper Samsung immediately. I'm really disappointed.

I recently bought iPhone 6s 64 GB, I am having strange problem while receiving or making calls. When I select 3G/4G as network mode for voice/data, I hear crackling harsh voice on calls. There is no problem with hardware as I have checked it through memos, EarPods and also by visiting apple care. After doing some research, I found that if I select 2G mode as network for voice/data then the voice is crystal clear and pleasant. I had contacted my network provider - AirTel as well, they are not sure about the cause of problem. Is it some issue with iOS 9 or iPhone 6s regarding network/hardware interface? I believe the problems described by others also relate to same problem?

I have an iphone 6 plus. The plus might stand for intermittent static bluetooth speaker vibration on calls when I use my bluetooth headset. It is not the headset because I replaced it yesterday with another Jabra Stealth and it is the same problem.

I get this occasional annoying static vibration sound in my bluetooth. It seems to happen only on calls not on music. The persons voice on the other end seems to make the speaker vibrate with static on my bluetooth but turning the volume down does nothing to stop it. It randomly stops after about 10-30 seconds. Then it is once again clear.

During a 1 hr call it might occur twice for 10-20 seconds each time, but its very annoying. It sounds like a blown speaker would. A crackly static sound that just vibrates to the person's voice.
It happens only when the other party speaks.

I also tried to find a source in my home sending out some interference that might cause this, but I cannot find one. I spoke to apple for an hour looking for the cause and problem was not cured.

I walked to my neighbors homes to see if something might be the cause, but the problem is by the time I reach my door to exit my home, the static mysteriously stops before I get to do anything. I cannot even change a setting before it stops on its own. Kind of hard to troubleshoot this annoying short duration intermittent issue. I never hear it when I use speaker phone and I never use the phone to make calls without a bluetooth headset so I cannot say if the phone's internal speaker would react the same way. I kind of doubt it since it does not happen using speaker phone.

I have used the same Jabra stealth headset for about a year with no problems until the last month or two. It seemed to show up about a month or two ago.

I am now on 10.0.1 and the problem is still there. As I type this Im testing the headset with music and for an hour I do not hear a problem so I do not think it happens listening to music.

It leads me to believe it is either the Iphone 6 plus (software bug or ?) or an ATT Cellular problem.

Can someone please help? Did anyone find a fix for this? Apple claimed they never heard of this problem when I called them to troubleshoot it.

thanks very much!!!!

UPDATE- In my case above I believe I have found the fix for the problem I described above. Last week Jabra apparently issued a firmware update for my Jabra Stealth headset. It is new firmware version 1.28

The update vaguely references what they call rare audio issues on iphone among other minor fixes.

I loaded the firmware update on my Jabra headset tonight and made a long call and the problem appears to be fixed. I will post again to confirm but after a few long test calls I hear no intermittent static/earpiece speaker rattling.

If anyone is using a Jabra bluetooth and experiencing this problem I would suggest you go to Jabra's web site and check your model for a firmware update on Jabra's site.

Hope this helps someone else as this was driving me nuts for the last few days and was happening for the last several weeks that I tried to ignore.

I finally isolated it to the bluetooth headset and not the Iphone, the IOS, or the carrier or some hidden interference somewhere. It was the headset and the firmware update appears to have fixed it.
