Apple has kinda gotten to the point to where Apple Configurator is more useful as a setup tool in conjunction with DEP than for pure 100% management. Its just not feasible to use AC anymore for more than 50 devices as the app just isn't robust enough to handle the needs of most educational and commercial customers.
Apple's DEP program in conjuction with MDM has really become more beneficial in the long run . DEP allows you to chose your own MDM management solution: OSX Server, Meraki, etc and wireless manage your devices without having to have them tethered to a macbook. MDM solutions with DEP also prohibit the removal of the configuration profiles and thus are just as secure now as AC profiles, something that wasn't always the case.
We have several schools with AC, and several that use OSX Server as a management solution and MDM is slowing gathering more steam in terms of ease of use and support-ability.
