El Capitan Frozen After Sleep

I have an early 2015 Macbook Pro that I recently upgraded to El Capitan. It wakes from sleep fine when it has been closed for a short amount of time, but if it is in sleep, say overnight, when it wakes, the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. This leads me to having to restart my computer daily now. Does anyone know any fixes for this? Thank you.

Please don't yell mdturnerinoz. We're trying to keep this forum productive. Posting three times the same thing is not helpful. ALL CAPS psts are not helpful.

I'm not sure you have the same problem as the rest of us. The problem discussed on this forum is Mac laptops freezing up after deep sleep and it's relation to VMWare Fusion.

You mentioned you have VMWare but only run it periodically. Have you noticed your problem as it relates to when you are (or are not) running VMWare?

Nov 26, 2015 3:16 PM in response to weirdbeardmt

In the inimitable words of the late Don Adams ("Get Smart"): "sorry about that, chief..."

My situation may be related to what you all are seeing, but I'm not sure how I can verify that other than my config. I have no need to run either of my VMs (Parallels or VMWare Fusion) unless I'm using the underlying VM at that time (I run Windows 8.1 under Parallels and Bugzilla under Turnkey Linux under VMWare); I use both VMs because I'm too lazy to consolidate the underlying OSes under one or the other.

Has anyone found any syslog entries that might key us in on what's hanging? I know that a MBP and MP are different hardware envs, but this sure smells like some sort of process loop with interrupts disabled or the like. If there is a way to have Activity Monitor log (or some other equally useful tool), we might be able to "catch" the process (or maybe it's even an errant driver) causing the lockup. Perusing thousands of log entries can be a real pain.

Nov 26, 2015 10:48 PM in response to zcolbster

As I mentioned before, for me upgrading from VMWare Fusion 6 to VMWare Fusion 8 solved the issue.

Those of you that have this problem while running VMWare should also make sure to check the checkbox in your VMWare virtual machine settings under Advanced => "Pass power status to VM".

There are numerous threads over at VMWare Support Community about this issue so make sure to check those threads for solutions.

Some people have seen log entries related to vmware worker processes crashing (usually due to excessive requests) which is why this thread is generally leaning in that direction. In my case, typically, if I don't leave vmware running overnight then my MBP wakes up fine. Having said that, I did have a hard lock up yesterday whilst actually using the MBP, without vmware.

Some people have reported issues / resolutions around removing errant unused hardware devices, possibly bluetooth related.

My suspicion therefore, other than the mid-day hang which may be unrelated, is it's actually something closer to the 'wake from sleep' entries. Something somewhere (be it vmware, bluetooth peripheral, some other energy management thing) is interfering with wake from sleep... but that's unsubstantiated at the moment.

The Apple support rep who contacted me (who, sadly, has now gone rather quiet) got me to create a sys diagnosis using the following shortcut:

shift + ctrl + opt + cmd + .

This creates a .tar.gz file in a tmp location. I've not got as far as inspecting the contents to see what's in it. (The main issue I have with this is that when the machine has frozen then it's not actually possible to create this report until the machine has been hard rebooted.)

Thanks for this. I have tried it and it does create a tgz with a bunch of diag data in it; I am hopeful that this will work when my Mac Pro freezes up per usual tomorrow morning:

I tried the procedure documented by weirdbeardmt but it didn't make a diag tgz file with the SBBOD like it did when I tried it ad hoc at the cmd line. I'm guessing that window manager or some similar system level process is looping, has a lock, or some such mutex situation that prevents using the keyboard or the mouse. Oddly enough though, today for the first time in about two weeks I didn't have a SBBOD. Don't know why, but I did recall making sure Safari wasn't running as usual when i stopped using my MP for the day. Not sure of what I did or didn't do differently from all the other days, but I'll try to figure it out.

Nov 29, 2015 5:36 PM in response to zcolbster

This is what seems to have fixed it for me. Just recently my 2015 MBP started freezing after a long sleep, every time. I did this 3 days ago and it hasn't froze from sleep since (actually hibernate, the MacIssues article explains). I'm confident that Apple will fix this issue and when they do, I will reverse this, but in the meantime - problem solved.

I got this from MacIssues (http://www.macissues.com/2015/05/08/how-to-fix-your-mac-not-waking-from-sleep/)

Enter the two commands below into a terminal session. You will get a semi-confusing/scary warning message before you continue, but I went ahead with it anyway. You can reverse it by typing in the same commands with 1 instead of 0.

sudo pmset standby 0

sudo pmset autopoweroff 0

The article didn't address the warning message. It was written before El Capitan, but I've never had this problem until just last week. I've been running El Capitan from the first day of release, and Yosemite before that.

I'll reply back if it seems to stop working or other issues result, but so far so good. Thanks MacIssues!

To follow up on my last post I disabled system hibernation via these commands:

sudo pmset standby 0

sudo pmset autopoweroff 0

Unfortunately this morning my computer was frozen again.

I should point out that my issue is that the computer is not dead. If I press a key, the system does wake from sleep and shows me the login page. Also, I can see an icon showing my new emails so I suspect the system is actually still running in the background. My problem is that the system will not respond to touchpad input or keypresses. With no way to login, I am forced to reboot the computer.

Snap. My issue is exactly this.

As per the earlier part of this thread, I've found that by sleeping VMs before shutting the lid, it is usually alive in the morning.

I've not yet got as far as upgrading to Fusion latest as I feel aggrieved to have to pay out for something like this. But if a patch for 7.1.x doesn't come soon, I may just bite the bullet.

Dec 2, 2015 6:56 PM in response to zcolbster

Hi,

We all know that this is a VMware compatibility issue with Macbook pro El Capitan.

This being said, I previously mentioned that upgrading from VMware Fusion 7.1.2 to 7.1.3 fixed the problem.

I was WRONG. The problem came back. After a few hours with VMWare customer support, they told me to upgrade with VMware fusion 8. They gave me a mere 15% off VMware (in addition to the 40% black friday discount). Also, for those who bought Fusion 7 between July and September, 2015, they will upgrade it for FREE.

I officially confirm that the problem is gone, for a week now. (Leaving vmware on and closing the lid does not lock the keyboard anymore).

Hopefully, this will solves everyone's problem. Unfortunately, if you don't want to pay, they don't plan to fix Fusion 7...

Hope this helps.

I'm running El Capitan 10.11.1, MBP retina 2015, and have been updating all releases when available. I think the problem has to do with the OS X than anything else. It had been working great but recently in the past 2-3 weeks I have been having the same issues. I don't run VM Ware but Virtual Box (Free and its AWESOME for running windows 7). Even when VB is "off" and not running and without any programs/apps opened and the printer is turned off, bluetooth turned off, it still hangs (spinning rainbow circle) whenever I press a key to wake from an overnight "sleep". Short naps I have no problems waking up. Deep slumber, it hangs. It's got to be the OS since no other program is running in the background.

I wish some Apple tech would moderate some of these forums like Microsoft does with their forums.
