What happened to my scanner El Capitan?

Thanks Apple! After I upgraded to El Capitan I went to use my scanner and behold I can't see it anymore. I have an Epson perfection 2450 Photo scanner which I use for scanning and faxing. So at the present I no longer have a scanner or a fax, thanks Apple! I went to the Epson website to re-install the driver, that didn't work. Then I removed it from Printers and scanners in System Preferences and tried to add it but now my network does't even see it anymore. Does anyone else have this problem?

Exactly, we seem to be getting less and less . Anyway, the problem with scanners is according to Canon UK, purely an Apple problem, and is to do with security ! At at stroke, therefore, millions of scanners have been rendered inoperable, or at reduced operating capability. It is up to Apple to put this right, and I wonder if there are any rumours to the effect that this is going to happen ?

Of course there is always the possibility that Canon see it as a business opportunity ! But, that seems very doubtful. They blame it on Apple, and seem to think that Apple have to correct a problem before Canon can do anything. Canon, after all, have always religiously updated, if necessary, as new OSX's come through. You can, of course, still operate a Canon scanner by logging into it via IJ, from you computer, but you have lost the convenience of the front buttons on the scanner:- scan to pdf/auto scan/copy/send: Go to- System preferences-printers and scanners-scanner-scan button-open Canon IJ Scant Utility, there are a lot of fiddly bits thereafter to select your DPI and if it is colour or print, do you want to select invidual boxes in the text, or the enclosing box . Then where to save it to and in which format. Only marginally above using tablets of stone !

These are the obvious general options people with this issue can peruse. It would seem some commenters overlook some of these.

  • Look for updated drivers. Make sure you're running the latest version for your system.
  • In case there is none, ask the manufacturer to provide updated drivers with SIP supprt, i e with a signed Apple developer certificate.
  • Turn off SIPand see if the old driver does work with it being off. This is what I did for hardware from 2006, that runs perfectly with its driver from 2009 in El Capitan.
  • Look for third party support, like general drivers ported from Linux
  • Build your own driver from source code under your Apple developer license, if available.
  • Stay at OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
  • Kindly request from Apple they make wrappers for old drivers that make them work with SIP being on.

We are in this situation because Apple decided to improve security for loaded Kexts. This is a good thing. Obviously Manufacturers should support their hardware with releasing updated drivers with the proper certificates that just work.

I think I just explained to you, it is not a Canon problem, nor can Canon do anything about it, because it is a security issue, that is a security barrier put in place by Apple, and it has to be turned off manually before, the Canon programme can operate fully. Canon cannot turn off security barriers ! There is a possible solution which has just come up on my screen. It is from OSXDaily

In effect you have to disable the System Integrity Protection (rootless) on your Mac. The above site tells you how to do this, but beware the site does not tell you how to turn it off in relation to the scanner alone, so presumably you have to turn off the whole shebang, which leaves your mac vulnerable. It also says that other items may act up if you do this. This is clearly a problem with Apple and they must make it possible to turn off specific parts of the System Integrity Protection (rootless)...

When I click FILE, it only gives me one option, CLOSE. TAKE A PICTURE is greyed out. I cannot find anywhere where it will allow me to reset TWAIN devices. This upgrade is so frustrating. I have top high speed internet and since the upgrade, my mac takes forever to type. I can type fast, yet it takes minutes for it to actually type it out for me and half the time it messes up the words and I have to slowly go and fix every word. I am to the point I want to throw my mac out the window. I wonder if I can have them uninstall the program and re install Yosemite. El Capitan is a joke. Hard to run business when your computer cannot cooperate. Never had this problem before until the upgrade. I can print just fine but scanner is not available. I have a Hewerd Packard Officejet J6480 All In One Series.

This is not normal at all. How much memory do you have? How full is your disk? Have you looked into getting an SSD? I have run El Capitan on a Macbook Pro from 2009 and now on a 2011 model and it's faster than Mavericks which was faster than Yosemite (hog). I have about zero issues. To me El Capitan is the best OS X version since Snow Leopard.

What I did to ensure top performance was to do a clean install, make sure all my apps were compatible and my hardware too. I had one piece of really old hardware that I didn't want to replace and I solved that by turning off SIP so the old kext could run.

From all the posts we've had here lately it seems some people come here to vent and not engage in solutions. I can't see what good comes from that. The choice is yours to make of course.

Switching from Firewire to USB did bring back my EPSON Perfection 2450, but I can't leave it plugged into the USB port. I get a notification that the USB ports are overloaded, and my iMac shuts down the entire USB bus. This is not a great solution, Apple!

It's also a bit inconsistent using Image Capture. One time, Image Capture didn't see my scanner, so I opened Graphic Converter and told IT to use Image Capture to Scan, then Image Capture saw the scanner both from Graphic Converter AND from Image Capture by itself. Weird.
