What happened to my scanner El Capitan?

Thanks Apple! After I upgraded to El Capitan I went to use my scanner and behold I can't see it anymore. I have an Epson perfection 2450 Photo scanner which I use for scanning and faxing. So at the present I no longer have a scanner or a fax, thanks Apple! I went to the Epson website to re-install the driver, that didn't work. Then I removed it from Printers and scanners in System Preferences and tried to add it but now my network does't even see it anymore. Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks so much @ThreeLightSix - this fixed my problem! Couple of specific details:

When starting Epson Scan it asks if you want to use the scanner with TWAIN. Answer yes.

Also, worth installing the latest drivers and version of Epson Scan - there is a run through of things to do on the Epson site (that doesn't mention the TWAIN reset and reboot you mention). Note that the Epson Perfection v500 Photo scanner doesn't show up in Printers and Scanners as mentioned, but you can scan from Epson Scan which is enough for me.

I too was having issues with my Epson Perfection V500 scanner. I tried the various suggestions here, but nothing worked. I emailed Epson about my issues and the emailed me with some follow up questions and had me call in. I called in and the tech had me reset my scanner by unplugging the USB cable and then moving the lock switch which slides over the USB port four times and then doing the same to the lock switch on the underside of the top cover (the lid you lift to put paper on the glass surface). After this the tech had me try the scanner and it is working.

It's actually the responsibility of Epson to update their drivers. No users are forced to update their OS and it they do they should research if their current gear and applications and other software will remain compatible or need to be updated if possible. Unless Apple delivered the printer, they are not responsible for drivers not being updated. In this case it's likely all that Epson would need to do would be to recompile their driver with System Integrity Protection (SIP) support. I had to turn that off in my OS as my really old never to be updated kext driver didn't support it as it's not signed. Now this release from 2012 runs perfectly in El Capitan.

Apple should start a service to convert existing drivers to have SIP support in my opinion. Most, though not all, would work after all. They should not give free support for this though. I suppose it's the support situation that prevents them from doing stuff like that. I think they should rethink their approach to old gear support even when the maker fails, like in this case .

The cables/adapters you bought should be able to return if they were sold to you under the impression they would work with your specific printer in OS X 10.11 El Capitan. If you ask Apple might take them back anyway.

The best way to deal with Apple is to be clear about what your rights are, research if your are right in your perceptions about your situation, be firm and polite. With that I have been getting excellent service for years.

I hadn't used my Epson V700 lately so just discovered the problem today. I'm on a Mac (El Capitan). What solved this problem for me was going to Epson site and reading their info on issues with El Capitan. They noted the need to make sure you have the latest version of the ICA driver, Event Manager, and Epson Scan. I saw initially "recommended" download but had to also open windows below that info to make sure I got all three. It's confusing; for instance you must download one item to work with Image Capture even if you instead wish to use Epson Scan. After following all the directions, I opened Epson Scan and as instructed chose TWAIN instead of Image Capture. Suddenly I saw the old familiar scan menu and scanned a reflective photo image. It worked just as before . Hurray!

To Whomever is out there:

I just switched to El Capitan from Yosemite on my 3 yr old iMac. Had already mentally committed to purchasing new Mac in April - can't deal with inevitable hiccups on so called OLD Mac!! Meanwhile, however, I need to SCAN important documents!!! NOW

My Canon Pixma printer/scanner no longer works. It's not just Epson.

This Canon Pixma was a REALLy inexpensive printer that has turned into a real workhorse for me; and my next printer - if I need one - will be a Canon also. But now not so sure I should stick with APPLE. I AM SICK OF BEING TREATED BADLY BY APPLE. All kinds of bugs. And these bugs - as we all know - AFFECT OUR LIVES!!!

It's actually the responsibility of Canon to update their drivers, not Apple. You weren't forced to update your OS and you should have researched before you did whether your Pixma thingie would remain compatible or if it needs to be updated. Did you even bother to look for an updated driver? Did you ask Canon to provide one?

Unless Apple delivered the printer to you under warranty to make it work with future versions of OS X, they are not responsible. In this case it's likely all that Canon would need to do would be to recompile their driver with System Integrity Protection Support (SIP) and it would work.

It's amazing how people blame Apple for the malfunctioning of third party products that have been abandoned by its maker. Apple can't be held responsible for products it didn't make. The solution for a case with an abandoned product is simple: Don't update OS X!

As it is now you can downgrade to Yosemite. It isn't like on iOS that you can't downgrade. You can go back to the version of OS X that worked with your device in a few simple steps.

This problem of yours isn't a bug. It's a failure of Canon to not keep updating their drivers. Guess why they do this?

One "Yes, But!" re: El Capitan and loss of scanner capability

Yes, but

Apple continues to send daily reminders to "update to El Capitan"!!? Big banner ad at App Store, too.

While still with Yosemite and early after El Cap release, I Googled "problems with El Cap upgrade" (to no avail), and finally sought the advice of Apple Care last year about upgrading to El Capitan. I was told to wait until the kinks were out. I figured well OVER a year was enough time for Apple to identify those kinks, iron them out, and, most important, WARN its users of the likely MORE COMMON possibilities of particularly noisome problems, like suddenly losing one's scanner.

Had I been forewarned about possible scanner issues I would not have upgraded, and would have waited until I purchased a new Mac, and at that point, and under no duress, I would simply have purchased a new scanner/printer. It's the SURPRISE about which we're all gnashing our teeth. Seems to me OS still in Beta should not be released. Couldn't there have been a neat list somewhere on Apple Support (?) that, AFTER a YEAR"S TIME, would delineate customers' various issues resulting from a particular upgrade?

I think those non-existent ALERTS/WARNINGS would have been a nice "gesture" and a wise business move to improve customer relations. Any attempt to ease the transition from one OS to another would have been greatly appreciated.

I will contact my printer manufacturer today and berate them, too.

So, 'nuff said.

Well, I'm with you on that. While I agree with Apple's ambition to be front runners, they should be more aware that their users tend to keep their products for quite some time AND in many cases buy new products as well. Apple could make such situations a lot easier for customers, but I suppose there's some laws or rules that makes the hesitant to go all in on that when it comes to third party products. I'm not sure.

It's great Apple focus on security, but they should make more things clear for their users. Like the fact that it's SIP that prevents drivers from running when this is a fact.

I note that El Capitan was released on sep 30th 2015. That's not even 6 months ago. The beta was first made available for the general public at July 9, 2015, not 9 months ago.

I do think as I might have written earlier that Apple should have made an option to OK drivers/kexts that are only prevented running in El Capitan because they lack SIP support. It's possible copyright laws might prevent adjusting code from a third party in any way, if that is even possible, or that compromising the SIP system would make it vulnerable and that these reasons made Apple not chose to not do something like that. Generally it's a shame makers don't support their products longer. I vote with my purchases on those companies that do.

Personally I'm very happy I can run El Capitan on my hardware from 2009 with as good or better performance than I had in Mavericks.

I read your post relating to downloads for correcting V700 problems. I have done the downloads and did a restart. I accomplished one scan and closed Epson scan. As has been the situation since October 2015, the same old message comes up and states it can not write to file, no choice in image capture. iMac does not see scanner.

I just wanted to inquire if your scanner is still functioning? I am running OS X 10.11.4.

What am I missing?

Would this from Epson FAQs help (though it's for Windows...)? Following it is the Epson support area info for El Capitan, where I found my answers and downloaded the 3 items required to get my scanner recognized and functioning again.

Well this might have worked but my version of Image Capture does not have "File >Reset TWAIN devices."

Apparently Apple does not want us touching that particular option any more.

They seem to be dumbing down a lot of software lately. I am tired of being punished so that the lowest common denominator user does not have any GUI stress.

The scan function on my HP DeskJet F4180 is now bricked! THANKS APPLE!
