El Capitan killed DVD drive

After updating to El Capitan on my mid 2010 iMac | 3.08 GHz Intel Core i3 | 16 GB memory 1067MHzDDR3, the computer:

  1. has lost its built-in DVD drive.
  2. does not recognize the drive. Finder cannot "see" it
  3. Insert disc (which, yes, works find in other DVD drives) and it spins it around back and forth for awhile and then spits it out

This seems to be a fairly widespread problem.

Mid 2010 13'' Macbook Pro (MacbookPro 7,1)

Same issue.

I installed El Capitan and immediately noticed the DVD drive was unusable.
I attempted to fix by resetting PRAM and SMC as per an online tut to no avail.
I attempted to fix by clean installing El Capitan, where the original install was performed over top of Yosemite. The drive is still currently unusable.

Second time an Apple software update has had a negative effect on the hardware (first time iPhone 4S iOS 7 bluetooth/wifi issue).

If I can get the drive working when my replacement Snow Leopard disc arrives tomorrow I'll stay with Snow Leo, the software this computer was built for.
Upgrading just isn't worth the risk anymore, IMO.

With an SSD the performance should be "Excellent".

There may be another cause for the slowness, but the sudoers file is not the ElCapitan sudoers file. instead you have the old sudoers file.

The ElCap sudoers file is rather different from the old sudoers file.

Are you sure you did a "clean" install ?

Maybe you can post the complete etrecheck list, to see if there are more remarks to make.

There is an inconsistency also in the report's Disk Information part also.

Thanks for the feedback. I believe that I did a clean install of El Capitan. Perhaps there's some final step that I've not done, so it may not yet be completely installed. It's a long story, but my initial attempts at installing onto a newly formatted drive were thwarted by an unreliable internet connection (I think), so I had to reinstall the original Snow Leopard and upgrade from there via the App Store.

The disk is not an SSD. It's a hybrid SSHD from Seagate, with only 8GB of cache.

Here is the complete etrecheck list that I just ran again as administrator to see if it made a difference. Look forward to hearing any more feedback.

Now pointing out that you are wrong. My superdrive stopped mounting after updating to El Capitan. A quick search online popped-up quite a few posts stating the exact same thing. Tried both the SMC & PRAM reset despite the numerous posts from people saying these processes didn't work, so I was not surprised yet still crestfallen. The only person said they got their drive to work again, stated that they went back to yosemite and "it works without any problems. Definitely a el capitan problem."

Jun 28, 2016 12:28 AM in response to Eric Root

This not necessarily a hacked sudoers file. It happens when you upgrade from Yosemite to ElCapitan: the "old" sudoers file "survives" instead of being replaced by the ElCapitan sudoers file. It happened to me on one of my MBPs. I just extracted the sudoers file out of the ElCap installer and replaced that for the old one.

Problems here are probably caused by the WDC software. It should be uninstalled completely. And maybe the elgato software.

Curious condition somewhat related to DVD issues.

MacbookPro 8,2 (late 2011) w/ El Cap. DVD app would not play Star Wars: Force Awakens. DVD would load, but no menus or controls accessible. Handbrake on same machine was able to deal with it just fine as did VLC.

MacPro 1,1 (2006) running Snow Lep. DVD app played Star Wars fine. Handbrake & VLC ok, too.

Sure looks like something must be fouled up in El Cap with the DVD app & the way it deals w/ copy protection issues.

Aug 3, 2016 10:35 AM in response to tnbriggs

Did you try with other DVD?

Did you try from another user account?

FWIW, I have had no trouble playing the few DVD I tried in El Capitan's DVD Player - either from a usb DVD drive or by playing a mounted DVD disk image file. It usually comes down to some old software causing problems, which is why some things work fine on a brand new user account or on a clean installation of EC.

Aug 4, 2016 7:45 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1

Star Wars: Force Awakens DVD is the only one the DVD player app has refused to play, thus far. Other commercial DVDs & my own authored DVDs play ok.

As I indicated in my original post, I think the issue is with some exotic copy protection scheme Disney has on that DVD that the DVD player app (in El Cap) can't deal with. Since the DVD plays fine with VLC in El Cap and with the DVD player app in Snow Lep, I agree that it is software related, the faulty software being the DVD player app in El Cap & the copy protection scheme on the DVD.

Interestingly, the MacbookPro is a boot camp dual boot machine. When I try to play that same DVD in Win 7 Media Player I get an error message regarding the graphics card and copy protection, which confirms my suspicion that it's the copy protection scheme on the DVD that's confusing the players, in both Win7 & El Cap.

My component Samsung DVD/Blu-Ray player connected to my television plays the DVD fine.

Thanks for your input.

El Capitan can use DVD drives just fine.

The common cause for trouble is usually older software that is causing a conflict.

A few usual things to try:

- Start in Safe Mode

- Try with a new user account

- Run Etrecheck and post its report here.

You can also try a clean install on a separate disk or partition, to make sure that the drive is being recognized.
