El Capitan killed DVD drive

After updating to El Capitan on my mid 2010 iMac | 3.08 GHz Intel Core i3 | 16 GB memory 1067MHzDDR3, the computer:

  1. has lost its built-in DVD drive.
  2. does not recognize the drive. Finder cannot "see" it
  3. Insert disc (which, yes, works find in other DVD drives) and it spins it around back and forth for awhile and then spits it out

This seems to be a fairly widespread problem.

I also have this problem on my Mid-2010 iMac (11,2) with built in SuperDrive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-5680H). This issue was driving me nuts for the longest time until I stumbled upon a fix via Terminal command for disabling some sort of security setting that was apparently not allowing the loading of DVDs in my SuperDrive. CDs would load just fine but attempting to load a DVD would result in the drive spinning the disc up and down several times until ultimately ejecting the disc without so much as an error message.

Of course, I'm having trouble finding the link I used to locate the Terminal command, so hopefully someone here will know what I'm trying to describe... The first time I ran the command, the DVD I was attempting to load magically was mounted in the Finder! After some time, the SuperDrive reverted to its old ways and stopped mounting DVDs.

I still haven't updated the iMac to the latest OS, so perhaps that will be my next step. I know there is nothing wrong with the drive because I've tried all the usual tricks: PRAM, SMC, disc cleaner, jamming a credit card with microfiber cloth, etc. etc. If I install the newest OS I'll report back with any results I have.

EDIT: I found what I was looking for: the System Integrity Protection (SIP) was what I disabled via Terminal in order to get DVDs to load again: http://www.macworld.com/article/2986118/security/how-to-modify-system-integrity- protection-in-el-capitan.html

Same thing with me. I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro. After El Capitan, the DVD drive stopped reading CDs and DVDs. They will insert, spin around for about 30 seconds, and then spit them out. I also had an external Aluratek USB 2 DVD reader/writer. I know that it worked, but after El Capitan, my Mac won't even see it.

Judging from the very high number of identical problems that I have read on this forum, it is definitely an issue that Apple needs to address, and not just rely on individual users with their duct tape and bailing wire solutions!

I will hold off buying any more Apple products until then.

My dvd player is part of my imac, not a 3rd party.

Why doesn't it work?

Because of other stuff that you have installed on your mac that either is not compatible with the OS version, or has bugs.

The DVD drives on macs (either built-in or external, Apple or third party) still work on El Capitan and Sierra.

For a small number of users who have had them not work, it always comes down to the same type of problem - conflicts with other software.

This is easy to prove. Just install a clean version of the OS and your dvd drive works.

To find out what may be causing the problem in the first place please run Etrecheck (an utility created by a respected member of this community) and post its report here. From seeing the report we may be able to figure out what may be causing the conflict.

Not sure what you are replying to when you say "don't think so".

kitcatalina wrote:

DVD worked.

Installed el capitan.

DVD stopped working.

I take it that you are implying that the blame lies with El Capitan.

If you want to make that an act of faith, I can't help you.

The claim that dvd drives don't work with El Capitan in general is simply false.

There have been people with problems, but for overwhelming majority simply carried on working.

You may think this is a big thread, but there were many millions of El Capitan users with no problem at all.

You either want to figure out the cause or you can stay in your corner and assign blame.

If the former, please provide the Etrecheck report and I will try to help. If the latter, there is nothing else to do.

I have a late 2008 Mac Book Pro. I have the same problem as you; I installed El Capitan, and my internal DVD drive stopped working. It takes a DVD or CD, thinks about it for a minute, and then spits it out. Also my external DVD drive also now doesn't work. I cannot, due to hardware, update to Sierra. Apple should have had the foresight to prevent older Mac Books from upgrading to El Capitan, since they didn't have a proper upgrade available.

I have read the Apple excuse that "millions of users have upgrade to El Capitan without any problems". My question to Apple is "How many of these were legacy units?". From browsing the support pages, I see hundreds of older Mac Book Pro users have the same problem.

Apple says that the problem is that I have non-Apple software, which is complete bull. Any upgrade should have taken into account older Mac Books, but apparently since the passing of Steve Jobs, Apple's reputation is no longer a priority.

Trying to explain to Apple reps that the problem is with El Capitan is like John Cleese of Monty Python explaining to Michael Palin that the parrot that he has just bought is completely dead!

My suggestion to Apple is to fix El Capitan, or at least supply an easy fix to revert back to an older OS.

Re-install the OS? Are you mad? It took me 4 days to back up my Hard Drive to an external drive.

Okay my paranoid take on this. IMHO a Macbook Pro is not portable without an internal disc drive but I think Apple is tired of fixing them. It is not a bottom line win, they are very shareholder driven and Apple is not exactly a charity. But to me this means no more Garage Record Producer. Is what it means! To me it is very sad. I lose my own independence and control over my own work if I need to send my recording out to a shop for printing:(

People in the music business can be wonderful but they can also be envious and not supoort your artistic endeavours because of whatever feelings of low self-esteem, anger, envy or maybe just a mean sense of humor, etc.) Add your guess here____

Apple is not helping us individuate ourselves at this juncture and making us more dependent on a very unfair royalty system which has always been unfair. Bill Maher asked Iced Cube is Spotify worse or just a different way of doing it, i.e, the cheapness of Spotify to artists. Apple Music makes me pay to play and my older family members (who have lived healthily to be old and still vibrant)

do not want to buy or access Apple Music For $10/mo. Getting them to Soundcloud is hard enough. But I do love(Apple love, here) how iTunes made albums out of my GarageBand projects that I wouldn't even have thought to make. Thank you!

But what about my older fans? Or busier or maybe younger but not super tech-savvy or not Apple fans? So I used to have Abbey Road at my desk and now you are saying it's over?!

tx,

Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool created by Etresoft, a respected member of this community to help us detect possible problems. It is recommended on these forums dozens of times every day, so the ones trying to help can have an idea of what those having problems have installed. It does not convey any personal information.

Each mac has a different set of software installed, and this makes it easier to provide appropriate advice.

Jul 30, 2017 9:24 PM in response to Lee Dunkelberg

El Captain killed my superdrive also. I see the software, but a minute after i insert a disc, the software disappears. I tryed all the fixes but gone again after inserting a disc. Atually noticed it having minor issues after Maverick. I thought about getting the Apple external drive but don't know if my imac will recognize it. I've read Apple is killing the superdrive everywhere on the net.
I think its a move to force customers to go streaming or download. To bad Apple is screwing people who still enjoy a hard copy of there music.

Oct 6, 2015 12:52 PM in response to Lee Dunkelberg

Lee please quit the ranting, El Capitan did not do anything to your SuperDrive nor is the issue widespread, you are the first that I have seen to report this!

Fully describe what you mean by

  • has lost its built-in DVD drive.
  • does not recognize the drive. Finder cannot "see" it

Once you describe in detail what you mean then we can begin to troubleshoot the issue. Until then please a SMC and PRAM reset, you may need to do these 2-3 times. Instructions are in iMac SMC and PRAM reset
