how to update the Mac OS X v10.5.8 to latest OS X?

Hello,

I have not been able to update my imac's operating system from v10.5.8 for last few years as I haven't been using it much. But now, I try to use it more and want to sync my iphone6 and ipad2 instead of using my sony laptop to sync them, I need to download the latest itune but because the OS is quite outdated, it would not let me download and update latest software including latest itune. Can anyone help? How do update to latest or at least more recent OS versions?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.

If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.

If it's a Core Duo Mac, clickhere, install the DVD, and run Software Update.

If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and once done, if desired, open the Mac App Store and try downloading El Capitan. If you get told that it cannot be installed on your computer, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

Thanks Niel,

yes, it's a core 2 duo. what dvd? the one that came with imac when i bought 5 or 6 years ago? or upgrade dvd? if the latter, where/how do i get it. i faintly recall that a few years ago trying and apple support said i need to call some number and order it...

oh, actually i just found the link to order the dvd; so ignore my prior question.

but new question: which should i order, snow leopard, or mountain lion or later?

You must order the Snow Leopard DVD to upgrade. Beyond that, the answer depends on your computer’s model identifier(it needs to be at least iMac7,1 to run 10.8 or newer) and what you’re using the computer for. Note that the latest version of iTunes won’t run in Lion.
