844-***-**** "IOS Support" scam

A window opened on my iPad saying I had won a discount iPhone 7 or whatever the newest number is, and to click for my price. I clicked, and my Safari was frozen. All I could access was a popup telling me to call IOS Support at 844-***-**** because a dangerous virus had gotten onto my iPad.

I called the number and got an Indian guy who identified himself as being with Verizon but working for IOS Support. He claimed to be able to reinstall my safari all cleaned up from afar for a payment of $29.99. Like an idiot, I almost went along with it because my iPad seemed frozen and the popup's URL had Apple in it, but I was asking a lot of skeptical questions and he finally hung up on me. I googled the number and found this is a known scam. I did give him my email address and he immediately knew my full name (??) so I will have to check my bank and credit cards tomorrow.

Are there any known cases of identity theft, etc. related to this number? Is there anything I should do now (on my iPad) to make sure I'm not already in trouble?

It's definitely a scam.

Definitely contact your bank. If you haven't already done so, setup alerts on your credit card accounts.

"He claimed to be able to reinstall my safari"

BTW, there's no way to reinstall Safari on an iPad without completely restoring the device.

Do this now. Tap Settings > Safari then tap to Clear History & Website Data then restart your iPad.
