I want to give a long presentation based on images in a Photos slideshow and using a manual transition. How do I get rid of the annoying control bar that pops up on every slide? This fades after a couple of seconds but is most unwelcome.....

I see that you wish to have more granular control over your slideshows than what is allowed in Photos. I would like to suggest that you use Keynote in order to create a presentation that conforms to your wishes. This help page can be of use to you regarding the creation of presentations:
