Win 10 installation on external drive.

I have Win 8.1 installed on external ssd. I want to upgrade to Win 10 without losing all my data. It appears I cannot use the simple upgrade process. Any suggestions?

iMac with Retina 5K display, iOS 8.3

Was the W8.1 installed on an internal disk? Did you use a cloning tool to move it to the external SSD? Is the SSD in a TB enclosure or USB/FW enclosure?

Use the cloning tool to clone Windows to an internal disk, upgrade, and clone it back to the external drive. W10 may not work properly from the USB. If you can move the SSD to a Thunderbolt enclosure, you will gain speed and the TB drive will look an internal disk.
