Volume

I have very low volume when i connect my iPod to my either of my cars audio systems. it's fine with my speakers in the house. Is there anyway to boost the volume in my cars?

It depends on how you connect the iPod to the car's stereo (and how you connect it to the speakers in the house.) Oh - and where you bought the iPod.

Are you connecting to the house speakers via the dock connector and the car by the headphone plug? If so, that will probably explain why there is a difference in volume. You need to check points 1-3 listed below in order to make the volume as high as possible. There may be more than one thing that is making the volume low, so you need to check all three points.

The output from the dock connector is higher level (volume) than the headphone socket. So if using the headphone socket;

  1. Make sure that the volume is turned all the way to maximum.
  2. Also, make sure that you don't have a Volume Limit set on your iPod. Check in Settings/Volume Limit to make sure that is at maximum.
  3. Next, if your iPod is recent and has operating system 2.0.5 (I think) there will also be an option to turn off the EU Volume Limit in the Settings menu. Make sure this limit is off.

If you purchased your iPod inside the European Union, but it does not have the operating system 2.0.5 then there will not be the EU Volume Limit Off option. It will be set to on and that's it. This means that the headphone output will definitely be lower than from the Dock Connector.

If the three main points above haven't cured the issue, or your iPod falls into the additional (bullet) point I made above, your options are as follows:

  • Use the Dock Connector to connect the iPod to the car stereo. (I realise this may not be possible.)
  • Buy yourself a headphone amplifier. You connect the iPod's headphone outlet to the headphone amplifier and the output from the amplifier to the car. Some of these amps run on batteries. Google "headphone amplifier". The Fiio and the Boostaroo are two makes I know of.

I do not receive any compensation in any way from either of the companies mentioned above. I purchased a Fiio amplifier for my use.
