El Capitan Killed My Scanner

I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan), and it promptly rendered a number of pieces of software (all non-Apple) useless.

One of them was the driver and interface for my Canon scanner. Canon (and it would appear, a number of companies) were caught flat-footed by the upgrade. Unfortunately, all I can do is wait for them to catch up.

In the meantime, I was looking for an alternative, and the scanner utility itself WILL scan using. I think, Mac's built-in ImageCapture.

However, even set to the highest settings - billions of colors at 600 dpi - it spits out really bad images - all pixelated and grainy. See here - http://www.randysrodeo.com/images/scan.png (large file...)

Any ideas? I am dead in the water....

Canon Lide 220

MacMini late 2012

Mac OS X 10.11.5

1. Trash the Canon Utilities Folder;

2. Trash User/Library/Preferences/Canon;

3. Reboot your Mac;

4. Install the latest ICA Driver, then IJ Scan Utility 2 and IJ ScanGear (download them from Canon website);

5. Reboot;

6. Check System Preferences/Printers-Scanners - Scan Button “Open Image Capture” NOT Canon IJ Scan Utility

7. Press “PDF button” on your scanner - you’ll get an Image capture window opened with no scanner present;

8. Close the window;

9. Open manually “IJ Scan Utility” - you’ll get a window explaining how to use your scanner buttons.

It’s a little tricky, but worked for me. There’s still a bug in the driver: if you press “PDF button” on the scanner you can’t see any scanner in the Capture image window; on the contrary, if you manually open Image Capture, you get the scanner on the left, that's quite strange...

IJ ScanGear Starter GX still remains for me the best app for my Lide 220.

Or, maybe Apple will provide something...

No, thats not how it works, vendors write drivers etc for operating systems, not the other way around. Apple have made Sierra available to developers for half a year now, most have managed to write software, some (like Canon) have written apologies instead.

Not sure, if you still have the above problem. It took me about 2 days to find the right solution, that worked for me on Mac OS 10.11.5 (iMac) and Mac OS 10.11.1 (Macbook Pro):

a) Delete all previous versions of VueScan (ideally with a program like CleanMyMac, including preference files (vuescan.ini, vuescan.log, com.hamrick.vuescan.plist)

b) Install the 32-bit version of VueScan Pro 9.5.37 - I uploaded vuex3295.dmg here: goo.gl/rlvlqH

c) Install LiDE 90 Scanner Driver Ver. 13.9.2a from here: http://goo.gl/zVIKoi

Let me know, if it worked for you too (if you have not given up already).

I actually did not encounter any problems with CleanMyMac so far. But I do admit, that I sometimes only use it to find/identify all files, that are associated with an application and then delete these files individually without using CleanMyMac 🙂. I also block all outgoing connections with Little Snitch for CleanMyMac, so maybe that's the reason, why I did not have any issues.
