Consistently get "server imap.gmail.com is not responding" in Mail

I keep having issues with receiving mail from my Google Apps accounts while using the Mail app on my iPhone. I currently have one Google Apps account that houses two different domain names so I can have separate emails for each domain. Up until very recently, this setup worked perfectly without issue for the past year or so, but suddenly this started happening. Usually, one of these emails will be working fine while the other is the one that stopped working. But I've noticed it's not always the same email that's having the issue, as sometimes it's one and sometimes it's the other. And I can't tell if it's an issue with Google or with Apple, but I ONLY have the problem in Mail on my iPhone. In any other email app or in Safari on my iPhone, it works fine. On my desktop in Apple Mail or in the browser, works fine. The exact error message states "Cannot Get Mail: The mail server 'imap.gmail.com' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings." The only way I can get it working again is if I delete the account from Mail and then add it again. Suddenly it starts working again using all the same settings I used previously...... Until the next day, suddenly it breaks overnight. I've noticed it's consistently happening in the very early hours of the morning while I'm asleep. I'll wake up and find the error again. Right now this has been a daily affair, and is proving to be really frustrating. For the record, this is on my iPhone 6s with iOS 9.0.2, and the issue is present on both Wi-Fi and LTE. Any ideas?

Let me add back in once more, that this continues to happen to me with my 5S, still on iOS 8.4. This is NOT a 9.x issue. Waiting seems unlikely to solve the problem, as Apple clearly has no interest in this.

My issue had not surfaced for a couple of weeks, but was back this morning. Trying all of the standards: kill the app, reboot, etc. I've always had to delete the account to get Gmail back working again, which is beyond annoying.

I have had this exact issue on both my iPhone 5s and now on my iPhone 6s, always with the most current software updates. It only happens when I power up the phone in the morning after it's been off all night. I can turn it off and on during the day for shorter times, and there is no error.

The daily solution that I've found is to simply double click the home button to display all running apps, swiping them up to shut them down, and then open the mail app with no other apps running. It works every single time, and runs fine for the entire day regardless of how many apps I have running after that, until I shut it down at night and restart it in the morning.

This is clearly an Apple Mail app problem, since nothing changes with the gmail service from the first power on access by the mail app to every subsequent access, and yet they refuse to acknowledge or fix it.

I would be very interested to know if this approach works for all of the others who have experienced this problem, and would certainly like to see Apple finally own up to and fix this issue.

I also updated to 9.2 about a week ago and believe that the error has not occurred since around that time. When it did occur, I would double click the home button and needed to swipe up only the mail app to shut it down, as opposed to my original post of needing to shut down all suspended apps. When I relaunch the mail app, it always connects correctly and continues working regardless of how many other apps were suspended.

A few days ago I did the upgrade to 9.3.1 (13e238) on my iPhone 4 - and up comes the problem.

I have tried all the check account settings / delete + recreate account / less secure apps / ports / SSL / google 'How to' / Apple support 'How to' / etc.

It does not affect my Macbook running OS X 10.9.5 (13F1712)

It does not affect my iPad using 9.2.1 (13D15)

<sigh>

I Too am getting this problem, only it is with my Talktalk accounts (UK). The message reads "Cannot get Mail the mail server 'mail.talktalk.net' is not responding. Verify you have entered the correct account information in mail settings."

i Have re-entered my passwords until I'm blue in the face and this problems persists. I get it every few minutes despite the fact that emails are being sent and received. It is very annoying and makes you wonder if all emails are being received or sent properly. This of course can't be checked as Apple Mail has no proper means of notification that emails have been received (unlike Microsoft Outlook).

i Have no solutions to this. It doesn't happen on an old windows vista based laptop I have, or on a Linux based laptop. It does happen in both my iPad and my iMac.

MAybe I should go back to Windows!!

forgot to mention my iPad is running iOS 9.3.2 and my iMac OSX ElCapitan 10.3... (I think).

I struggle with setting up a GMail account on my iPhone 5 with up to date software and got no where.

Online advice without fail was Settings>Mail>Add account>other and fill in the blanks. One page I looked at had super screenshots as well. Still got the same message imap.gmail.com not responding even though I have an Gmail account.

Well being stupid I used logic. It is after all a Gmail account I want access to so why not just ignore all the advice about using other and use Google. When I was asked for the email address I put it in. When I was asked for the PW I put it in. Voila! Connected and Gmail is now on my phone and set as the default.

Who da thunk it!
