iOS 4.3.5 error 9 when updating to 9.0.2

Dear Mac Experts,

I've been having issues updating my cousin's old iPad 2 WiFi (MC979ZP) from 4.3.5 to 9.0.2. I keep having Error 9 whether I use DFU or any other method. Apart from that, Apple has also stopped signing all versions of Firmware prior to 9.0.2, therefore any older firmware is unusable (Error 3194 without fix even using System32). I was also trying firmware 8.4.1 and older firmware.

By the way, I've tried many different original cables and many different computers, both Mac and Windows, including the garbage bin.

According to Apple's HQ, this could be an "Untested Issue with latest iTunes and iOS9 having a negative effect on very old versions of iOS being upgraded to iOS9".

I'm writing here to seek help from you, if there is any other solution to this issue, and also to hopefully notify Apple's Support on this issue and hope they will fix it on their next version of iTunes.

Warmest Regards,

Mak ********

OK, in English - I apologised for probably a bad English to German translation - blame Google!

I have tried emailing a customer service email with all this information and a plea to deliver a better solution other than Jailbreak.

I suggested they perhaps allow a specific iOS 5 or 6 update to complete as a stepping stone to iOS9.

We could do this using iTunes with the correct IPSW restore file, using shift Update in iTunes.

Don't bother trying this now as Apple reject this as an unsupported upgrade - hence why people are suggetsing Jailbreaking.

We shall see!

Hope everyone enjoys this festive period according to your own personal beliefs - from me have a Happy Christmas.

I have no experience of Jailbreaking and don't particularly want to, but I assume that you can select whichever update you want.

I guess Jailbreak is a hacked iOS??? Don't even care...........

Apparently the iReboot software (Registered/paid for version) allows you to update later and effectively un-Jailbreak with the latest iOS.

Hope everyone enjoys this festive period according to your own personal beliefs - but from me, have a Happy Christmas.

OK thanks for the info, this suggests that the crucial update was between iOS5 and iOS6.

I was able to update two iPads from 6.1.3 to 9.2 last week.

We are no further forward in getting a fix from Apple but at least we have most of the facts now.

If anyone is going to risk a Jailbreak approach, then iOS6 will be the upgrade to go for.

As I stated before, I have no experience with Jailbreaking and neither condone it or want to try it myself.

I also have no idea whether this would work.

No one should have to pay for a fix when it is an Apple error that caused the issue. I am online with a level 1 tech now who will go through all the basic troubleshooting steps. It's painful but necessary in order to get next level support. If requested to send in, DO NOT pay for it. It is a bug with their system and they NEED to own it.

I got Apple to take the iPad for repair on their dime. Just have to be diligent with them that their software caused the issue and is not of any neglect on your part. By doing this, they will assume all costs and responsibilities.

I have an iPad 2 with 4.3.5 with same issue #9 error. I called Apple and talked with a few people and got a supervisor, who really didn't know much. She was nice enough though and set me up an appointment at an Apple store. She supposedly documented me having tried 3 different pcs and cable to do the update since the error 9 refers to security and firewalls, etc. So I went to the Apple store and spoke with a "genius" who then tried doing the update on 2 different macs with 2 different cables not bothering to hear that I already tried this 3 different ways. So he says he's going to go in the back and speak to a tech and comes back and says the tech thinks its the logic board, pretty vague, then tries to get me to trade my iPad 2 in for another iPad 2 for $250. Pfft, I got it for free, no way I'm paying $250 for an iPad 2. So long story short, Apple was pretty worthless.

I also tried Dr.Fone, not sure if any of you heard of it, but they have a trial version so you can reboot and get back to normal mode. I also used the full version and downloaded iOS 5.0 ipsw from a site that had ALL previous versions and tried to go to v5 first but just kept getting error about firmware package and device models do not match so I'm done jacking with it. Guess I got my moneys worth?

Please stay on Apple about this. It's thier problem, they changed partitions some where around ver. 5 or 6 which makes the iPad 2s not update to the newest version. I have two of my iPads sent to them right now for replacement or repair and was told thpier engineers were working on a fix in a later update but everyone needs to bug the crap out of them about this or it will never get fixed. The up rise the better. Nothing can fix the iPad 2s expect APPLE.
