iOS 4.3.5 error 9 when updating to 9.0.2

Dear Mac Experts,

I've been having issues updating my cousin's old iPad 2 WiFi (MC979ZP) from 4.3.5 to 9.0.2. I keep having Error 9 whether I use DFU or any other method. Apart from that, Apple has also stopped signing all versions of Firmware prior to 9.0.2, therefore any older firmware is unusable (Error 3194 without fix even using System32). I was also trying firmware 8.4.1 and older firmware.

By the way, I've tried many different original cables and many different computers, both Mac and Windows, including the garbage bin.

According to Apple's HQ, this could be an "Untested Issue with latest iTunes and iOS9 having a negative effect on very old versions of iOS being upgraded to iOS9".

I'm writing here to seek help from you, if there is any other solution to this issue, and also to hopefully notify Apple's Support on this issue and hope they will fix it on their next version of iTunes.

Warmest Regards,

Mak ********

I hate to doubt what people say, but are you absolutely sure that it was iOS 4.3.5 that you started from?

I was able to update iOS6.1 directly to 9.2

I suspect that problems we are experiencing will occur before iOS 5 as that is when iCloud was added and I think that gave a change on the iPad update process that is causing the problems.

You couldn't update the iPads at this iOS level any way other than via iTunes as update over Wi-Fi wasn't supported.

I would like to see the update logs from your PC for this update:

You can find it under your user name folder -> Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPad Updater Logs\iPadUpdater.log

Note several logs are created for the update, such as one for backup -

This shows the iOS Software level when the iPad was backed up before the update.

8K2 was iOS4.3.4

8L1 is iOS 4.3.5

iOS 5.0 was 9A334

iOS5.1 was 9B176

I think iOS 6.1.3 was 10B329

iOS 9.2 is 12B410

Note these are the numbers you see on the IPSW files used for the updates.

I'm also interested in the larger log - probably about 26Kb in size.

Many people are hanging on a successful update path from iOS 4, let's make sure we don't give them false hopes.

Thanks

Actually, the larger log file does show this information too, along with the target software level:

Oops, Mistake on my part - 13C75 is iOS9.2 - 12B410 was iOS8.1.1

Hi, remember that this is a only forum for Apple users. It is very unlikely that Apple Support look at this.

I have even sent links to the thread on the online chats to their support team to prove that we are all getting this problem.

It doesn't seem to make any difference, but we all try to help each other wherever we can.

The software we mention will help get the iPad working if you get stuck in recovery mode, but other than that we are all pretty stuck at the moment.

Dec 23, 2015 7:05 AM in response to RussellCF58

Yes it was IOS 4.3.5 as the prior owner scratched the IPAD back to original before I got it. I looked up the version and then started reading these blogs before updating fearing the problems I may have. Also someone said they updated there iTunes to 9.2 - not correct ! Your iTunes and your IOS are 2 different applications. Apple suggested to update to the newest iTunes which is 12.3.2 and use iTunes to update your IPAD2. So if you're IPAD2 is bricked with the error9 you probably should just scratch it and try what was stated in my earlier post or call Apple at 800-275-2273.

I already have the latest Itunes which is 12.3.2 and I also try to re-install it. Still it cant fix the problem. Already tried Different Cables ,I even borrow my friends 30 pin cable. Already Tried it in diffirent computers, different OS, pro win7,8,10, Mac,, try to Turn off FireWalls , securities, connect it to High Speed Usb port, Usb 3., 2.0, Disconnect other peripheral device, I always check for updates and read so many intructions just get rid of this error. Still NO Solution Its been month since I encounter this problem and its kinda frustrating. No Solution. I'm aware whats this forum about, I just want to let out my frustration here about this Error. Please if someone find a working solution please kindly share it here .Thanks.

It's interesting you talk about "scratching the IOS back to the version when the unit was new".

Pretty sure most of the people here, including myself, have iPads that haven't ever been updated beyond 4.3.5

We missed a crucial update between iOS 4 and IOS5 IMHO.

When an iPad is reset to defaults, that doesn't put the iOS back to any earlier version, it only clears the applications and user data.

You have to deliberately set the iOS version back using various tools, BLOBS etc.

I would love to see the iPadUpdater log for your update as mentioned in my post earlier if you can find it.

I have pretty well given up on this - the manager will have to fund more iPads if they want new Apps.

They can still use the iPad at 4.3.5 and it works very well as it is, you just can't get the apps you need.

Dec 23, 2015 11:04 AM in response to jdlivara

This. Exactly this.

Updated iTunes, used the specified cable, etc, etc, error 9, restart. Still nothing. I'm beginning to think that there *is* no solution and to be honest, i'm pretty doubtful apple is willing to help us considering the fact that, in my opinion, we represent a small minority of the apple community.

On top of that, after looking into the functionality of the 9.2 update on the iPad2, it seems quite a few users are having difficulty with the update. A lot of people are reporting freezing, restarts, etc, and i'm beginning to wonder if updating is even a good idea. Surely these are just isolated cases?

Dec 23, 2015 1:03 PM in response to iDzul

Hi, I'm confused - do you mean 4.3.3 has to be jailbroken to do this, or just 4.3.5? I looked up beehind and it says it is primarily a downgrading tool, can it also be used to upgrade? If so, is it even possible to jailbreak the 4.3.3 anymore?

Agree on Russell's post above, ipad simply was somehow never updated past 4.3.3. If you have anything before 5, there simply is no option to update OTA directly from the ipad, so that's not what the problem is in people's approach, corvettezl1; I too would like to see your logs. 🙂

As far as I can tell, the issue has nothing to do with hardware; restore/recovery through itunes throws error 9 (sometimes a different error if I try to manually throw a .ipsw file at it), and it doesn't work with a new cable, with an up-to-date itunes, w/a fresh restart, or on on three separate computers (two windows, one mac). I wouldn't even mind not fully upgrading to the current ios if the hardware/compatibility is gonna bottleneck any performance gains, but I would certainly like to move up past 5/6 so I can use at least some of my preferred apps. 😝

RussellCF58: Hmmm apparently your using a Mac and I'm using a PC with Windows 7 so I found the iPadUpdater log.

OK thanks, no I am using Windows 7 at work and also tried with Windows 10 at home.

software version 13 is iOS9 so looks like you upgraded from iOS 9.0?

The log was for a backup rather than upgrade, you may want to check other logs, but I think you just had an easy upgrade.

Regarding iOS 9.2, I am using this on my iPhone 4S and many iPads at work with no problems.

This may depend on the apps of course.

The update switched on Bluetooth and created a Game Centre ID and lgged you in.

That wasn't good for our shared apple id devices, but other than that no problems reported.
