Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

iPad Air 2 screen/LCD defect on left edge of the display.

I am having iPad Air 2 64GB model running iOS 9.0.2. First let me clear that it is not a software bug and i have tried software troubleshooting.

If carefully observed, the left edge of the display is not properly illuminated. It looks like as if a black shadow is running alongside the left edge. Many users have reported this issue on Apple discussion forum also called-Book Spine Effect

IPad Air Screen Book Spine Issue

But i don't see any progress over such threads.Maybe people have learned to live with that thing or have stopped buying iPads.

I,first visited Apple Authorized Service Provider who told me to call Apple Care India who in turn asked me to provide feedback about the defect on the Apple Feedback site.

The Service Provider has also confirmed the issue present, not only in my device but in all iPad air 2 models.I have personally visited 5 showrooms where this issue was present in all the devices. Its a manufacturing defect.

I am attaching images, not sure whether you will be able to spot it out because on camera photos its not that visible. You have to physically hold the device and notice the effect. If you don't own iPad Air 2 and want to observe this defect, visit any store who are having iPad Air 2, open anything with white background at low brightness.Notice the difference between how the text on left edge looks and how does the same text look when you hold the device upside down so that right hand side text comes on left edge of the display. The issue is more observable at lower brightness because low illumination/light will not be able to reach the edges.

I am residing in India where there aren't any official Apple Stores. There are Apple Authorized Re sellers who sell products and Apple Authorized Service Provider(AASP) for providing after sales support. Like i said, the AASP has confirmed that the defect is not specific to my iPad but present in every iPad air 2 model. So, replacement will not solve the problem. I,personally have visited retail shops where i found the same issue on iPad Air 2 model. I am currently in touch with Apple Care representative who told me that he''ll confirm the issue with technical team in 4-5 days. I have created this thread in a hope that Apple will confirm/acknowledge this defect arising from manufacturing and will take appropriate action, and also for those people who have noticed this abnormality.

Thanks again for your reply. It seem you are quite active on the forum. Really appreciate that.

So, today got a call from Apple Care India who confirmed this issue with the service centre guys and R&D team sitting in Ireland. The person(Apple Care Executive) is saying that "it is the way in which the screen is being manufactured. So, Apple does not consider it as a defect. And if Apple had received complaints regarding this they probably would have taken some step like a replacement program". He is ready to offer a replacement but agrees that the replaced unit will also behave in a similar way. They are neither ready for refund because it is not bought from Apple Store(There is no Apple Store in India) and nor they are ready to provide a substituted product of higher value.

If 100 people buy an expensive product(Lets admit Apple is expensive, way too expensive for countries like India,my salary is less than the cost of product) and 70 out of them find something that is not right about it( I mean when they compare the product with market competitors and analyze it deeply) ,and out of these 70, 60 choose to live with it and 10 still report this as erroneous, would you ignore them or acknowledge them. I don't see the claims of Apple's Customer Satisfaction rate of 99% being justified here.

First of all, the discussion that you referenced in your post above is not about the iPad Air 2. That discussion was from January 2014. The iPad Air has just come out in the fall of 2014 and that is what is being discussed in that thread.

Secondly, only two people responded. Two people. Hardly a widespread issue.

I have an iPad Air 2 and I don't care what they tell you in India, i have seen about 20 iPad Air 2 screens in person and not a single one has this defect that you describe. I am not denying that your device has it, but I am telling you that not every iPad Air 2 has this defect.

Here is a screenshot of my iPad Air 2. It looks nice and white to me on the left side. No shadow at all.

IF you are not happy with your iPad, get a replacement. If the replacement has the shadow, explain the situation politely to the store manager. Be persistent until you are satisfied that you have received a good, reliable device.

First, i gave reference to iPad Air 1 because people observed such issue in the 1st generation model also.

Second, here are some posts which talk about such issue in iPad Air 2.

http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-air-2-display-models-obvious-screen-def ects.1807947/

http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-air-2-left-edge-of-screen-not-as-bright .1807678/

Enough,right?

Third, not everyone cares about such things and bothers to post it online. So maybe people have neglected or become ignorant of such thing and are moving on.

Third, the Air 2 models which you checked. Did you check it in dark room with minimum brightness and white background.

Fourth, About the Screenshots. Lets say you got a crack on your display. Take a screenshot. Will the crack appear on screenshot? Or take two screenshots one with minimum brightness and other with full brightness. Are the screenshots different?

No,right! Because screenshot captures what the cpu and gpu are rendering on display(how the software puts on an image). They don't capture how the display looks to you. In short, anything related to hardware(LCDs and all) will never appear on screenshot. So better take camera snaps with your phone.

Fifth, yesterday got a call from a representative.I am not mentioning the name and email.

Executive Relations EMEIA

Apple Distribution International

Hollyhill Industrial Estate

Republic of Ireland

She confirmed this behavior with R&D team in Ireland. Same reply as earlier "it is the way in which the IPS screen is being manufactured. So, Apple does not consider it as a defect".

I told her that you don't observe such thing in other tablets present in the market. She said "can't really talk about other products"

The solution she said(this is funny) : "To use iPad in proper ambience light with at least 30-40% brightness"

So, that means i can't use this device in dark ambience and low brightness. So now they come up with a solution by which i can ignore this defect.Silly.

They are not acknowledging this as some kind of abnormality in manufacturing. Instead they are coming up with "This is the way it is".
