iMac
I redone the flash drive the other way through terminal. It looked right when it did it, said installer done, bootable done.all ok
but still won't recognise in start up..
when end I boot with command you can see the external El Capitan showing up in orange like it should so get tried to install it from that ,went through all the usual stuff and at the end had errors again. I also held the PRAM keys earlier what you said as well.
what else can I do. HELP
Try starting up in Internet Recovery (command - option - R on a restart). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS. It will install the OS your computer shipped with.
Have you tried that "new" USB drive to start your other, working mac? Still need to verify that the disk itself is good.
i went and bought new 32gb usb. did all the stuff in terminal and it said done. I named it ElCapinstaller like it said but it is now called install OS X El Capitan.
Is this correct. I still have the usb on my macbook and when i look in startup it is not showing.??
I will go and put it on my iMacl later but i don't hold out much hope if its not showing in start up on working macbook.
TThanks.
I think my last option will be to replace hd.
I Don't know why in start up I can't see the usb I made.
I made it on disc maker X and tried again directly through terminal and both times it said it was done but
it just won't show in start up. Getting fed up,
Jayne...good article by tehcaptain there...are you able to see the USB drive when booted into recovery mode?
The fact that you can't see the USB drive on the "working" mac is still an indication that something is not right there. Can you provide the steps that you followed to create it (including how you formatted it initially)?
then I opened they software to make it followed instructions and it said done.
i Also tried the other way in terminal copy and pasting it then it asked for password so I put it in then it went 0 to 100 percent and copy files done and boot done.
so I did safe eject
Since you can see your USB drive in recovery mode, how about trying tehcaptain's method for copying files/folders that you wish to preserve? Does that work for you?
I Am going to try will I have to format usb again or can I just use it.
should be able to just use it
Sorry for slow reply, I had to get on with my work.
I Just tried techcaptain's method.
saved 2 small files (compressed mode) onto usb.
Then put the usb into my MacBook Pro..My files opened perfect.
i need to save all my files now so I will get a 1tb external first, think it will take a while As I have iMovies to save as well as documents.
At least I know I have not lost it all.
Then I can hopefully put the original disc in and wipe clean And have my iMac up and running again.
I Would not have been able to get this far without all your valuable help.
I have been using macs for 7 years ,and "they just worked"
I will let you know when job complete or any more problems.
Thanks again.
Thanks tehcaptain
I am in the process of saving my files, tested 2 on usb and worked perfect, going to buy a 1tb external to make it easy.
THen hopefully get my iMac working after.
No problem. I do this kinda thing for a career. Glad I could help 🙂
Jayne,
So you'll be getting a new internal HDD as well, correct? You will have to start from clean (here's a procedure http://osxdaily.com/2015/10/01/clean-install-os-x-el-capitan-mac/), which means you will still need a bootable external drive.
You need to solve this problem. What was the last thing you tried with the bootable drive?
thanks
