Well first of all I just want to recover all my files safely to external drive to make sure I don't lose anything.

Then I was hoping, assuming there's not much wrong with the hard drive, that I can reinstall the original mountain lion installion disc and wipe the hard drive clean and go from there.

i Know I still have the problem of not having a bootable usb and don't know why, so it still needs to be worked out.

The last thing I did with that was to redo with the discamaker x and it did say completed but just would not show in start up.

I Made it in a 2008 MacBook Pro and tried a 2014 MacBook Pro and both the same result.

have you made one of these.?

Everything is good now with my iMac 🙂

I bought a 1tb external passport for mac first to save files.

I did what tehcaptain's report said Boot into recovery mode (Command + R). Go to Disk Utility and go to File > New Image > Image from Folder.

This allowed me to save everything i wanted. I saved as read and write . I checked it all saved and opened correctly on my macbook.

I then formatted my hard drive to wipe clean, then closed down and started in recovery mode,

then chose the option install OSX. I connected to wifi option in the top right hand corner.

It asked where i wanted to install so chose my hard drive i had just formatted.

It started to install asking for my apple id.

New install went perfect, downloading the latest El Capitan from the internet.

When you go in app store I can see all the previous OSX I have purchased as well.

Its like having a new iMac out of the box again, now I can put back what I want from my external passport for mac i bought.

I am very happy now🙂

Thank you jmac1163 and tehcaptain for your information.

I started not knowing anything technical about macs, they just work (usually),

and without your help i would have been worried about going into different settings.

I posted in another thread, and I'll post in this one now because the solution appears to apply to me but not entirely.

I went out and bought a 1TB hard drive to back up all my files. I managed to get into disk utility to try to recover. I try to save files by going to file, new image, image from folder...

However, it won't let me save individual files, only folders. There are a few word files that I had on my desktop before crash that I haven't been able to save. Also, the files I HAVE saved, I don't know if they are saving correctly... they are saving as dmg files... I'm in a household with PC users and when I try to look at the files on the computer of those people I have no idea if they are saving correctly.

Any ideas? I have a bunch of stuff to sort through during the holidays before going back to work and this is cutting into time!
