iMac startup freeze after update to OsX El Capitan

Hello,

After I installed the OsX El Capitan update on my iMac 27" (1TB hard-disk), it systematically freezes at startup, with the black screen and the apple visible but absolutely no progress in the horizontal bar below. Only solution is to re-install the OsX El Capitan update again from scratch. This happens systematically, always the same (so, after re-installing, next time I'll shut down the iMac won't start again and new re-installation is necessary).

FYI, I also installed the same update on my MacBook Air (with SDD memory) and it starts up fine (although I see some awkward behavior in some situations, but nothing unsurmountable so far).

Thanks for your help in solving the problem.

There may be more causes.

Try this:

shutdown, wait 10 seconds, then start and immediately when you hear the startup chime press and hold the Shift key, keep holding until you see the grey progress bar, let go; the start up (Safe Mode) will take considerably more time than a normal startup. Let it start completely. Then shutdown and start normally.

If this does not help: do it again, and in the Safe Mode download Etrecheck.app (www.etresoft.com) and run it, post the list here.

Lex,

1: Tap Tun vpn: Uninstall. Find another vpn if you really want vpn

Could not find so such thing as "Tap Tun vpn". FYI, my only vpn use is enabled through Citrix, which is a well reputed and fast updating source. It is a multi-platform VPN system, highly secured (it is used by e.g. Banks) and is absolutely mandatory for my work. Any hint?

2. AntiVirus Software: uninstall what you have, and if not, remove the remnants: in Finder MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchDaemons: delete the rapiback.plist. Then open the Trash, and select the plist, and while holding the CTL key, click it and choose "delete immediately" (thanks Leonie).

I had at a time installed Symantec's Norton Security Com Backup but quickly uninstalled it because it would significantly slow down the computer and was not too user-friendly with Citrix. I never installed any other anti-virus, and have none installed now therefore. But I did as you suggested.

Regarding Java, it was actually already set to ask. I'll be watching as you suggest.

I now have work to do, shall proceed as soon as with a bit of time available to take the risk (although I have the MacBook Air as a second resource, and all files are Synced by Mozy). Shall welcome any further suggestions if you'll think of any in the meantime.

Thanks, Pedro

Do you have addiitonal suggestions as how to address them?

Thanks, Pedro

don't worry about the webkit, if you run a second Etrecheck list 5 minutes later it is probably normal again, It is not really bad because it uses free ram, (otherwise you would have had Swaps out to the disk).

about Google: I do not really know, I hate Chrome which may be the culprit; but to get it away you must uninstall Chrome I suppose.

Is your issue under control?

Oct 16, 2015 11:24 AM in response to Lexiepex

Thanks Lex.

Google Chrome is necessary for me because in some situations, and contrarily to your experience, Safari presents problems. I understand, however, that the item GoogleContactSyncAgent may be inked to syncing my Mac's contacts with Google, where I actually have all the contacts stored and shared through multiple devices (including Android smartphone and iPad).

I haven't yet had the opportunity (and the courage) to go beyond restarting, shall probably do a longer shutdown trial tomorrow, and shall keep you posted. But FYI last time I restarted the computer froze when shutting down (it became extremely slow and unstable after having performed all the tasks), so I actually had to force shutdown and startup immediately on sequence.

Cheers,

Pedro

Oct 17, 2015 2:29 AM in response to Lexiepex

Here we are again, back to the drawing board, frozen at startup, apple logo showing but non-progressing (actually showing no start, even) bar below.

So the situation is, as far as its effects show and after all the fixes that were done, exactly the same as reported at start.

As I have an alternative machine to work with and have full file syncing between the two, I left the iMac on its frozen status for now. Maybe it will unfreeze after a couple of hours...? Actually, that's what I had to do yesterday when I shut it down, it would never move to real shutdown so I went out for dinner and eventually, when I came back, shutdown had completed. So the machine is clearly not working (?) as it should. Only systematic re-installations of the OS seem to do, meaning 1 hour for starting up the ****** beast.

Where do I go from here now? Maybe I should make a "hard reset" (i.e. start totally anew) to the machine... I wouldn't probably like to perform a recovery from the Time Machine as it might reproduce whatever is causing problems now. But I might use the settings of my MacBook Air to do it - by either importing them from the Time Machine (how can I import the settings from another Mac's Time Machine?) or, if I remember well, when we start a Mac anew we may instruct it to import settings from another Mac.

Hints on the above, or any other suggestions (please do not ask me to uninstall applications that are essential to me and my work and, besides, are up and running normally on my MacBook Air, as they were before upgrading to El Capitán on the now frozen iMac)?

Thanks, Pedro

Mmmmm, I still have to do my job...

Can you set the synchronizing off in the other computers, then

Can you do a SMC reset: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

Do it twice with 10 seconds in between.

Then do the Pram reset: How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

When it still does not start normally:

Test the Hardware: Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

this takes more time. the result: if it is bad: it is bad; when it is good: can still be bad...

Thanks Lex.

All you suggest would certainly take a lot of time and effort, to possibly still non conclusive results. Very honestly, I think I'll cut it short and move directly to a clean start and then import settings and apps from my MacBook. I had performed a disk check prior to having even started to post here. My time is short too though, and besides I have very frequent traveling absences (hence the MacBook Air), so it is likely that I'll take more than one week to do that kind of operation, which may be time consuming and not as linear as manufacturers always claim.

There might, however, exist other hardware issues (which I would find odd because of the absolute coincidence with the upgrade), and the hardware test should indeed be made anyway, I am besides 2 months from manufacturer's guarantee for the hardware, so if something is wrong better to act now while I am still covered.

I'll post here any news as they'll come.

Thanks again.

P.S.: Isn't there a way to return the status of this thread to "unsolved"?
