unable to open a document from old computer

Good evening.

It is probably a document from the "classic" era. It is probably a text document.

Is there a general strategy that usually works to open old files?

Get Text Wrangler, drop the file on it's icon.

Almost sounds too good to be true.

It will open anything and save it to a "modern" OS X Word file?

It won't save Word, or open Word Docs, for that get LibreOffice & try it.
