Error 0x000000f issue on Bootcamp launch of Windows 10

I have been using upgraded Windows 10 for some months without issue. However, after running the Automatic Repair feature it gave a message that it could not repair the disk and when rebooting into Windows (alt key held), it now just opens to a blue screen with the following error message;

The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Error code: 0x000000f

I had this issue before and in the end I did a fresh install with Windows 8.0 but I really don't want to have to do another time. I see other related threads and wanted to really find a solution for this.

Referring to this thread and related posts, I have the following details which may help diagnosis;

My setup;

iMac 27 Inch Late 2013, OS X 10.10.5

Windows 10 via Bootcamp

I have a Fusion Drive installed so I have used /disk1 where I can see the relevant Bootcamp reference.

Various Terminal results copied below for reference.

I assume that the Windows Automatic repair ran then altered the BCD (guess it's due to the HDD/SSD of the Fusion Drive) which caused it.

The Bootcamp partition is visible via the Finder and Disk Utility which also now shows a greyed out disk1s5 which is new.

I have downloaded testdisk and running a QuickSearch now though it seems to be taking a long time so will post when completed.

Also, I checked the suggestions for fixing this using gdisk which I have installed. However I was unsure on the correct values to use when referring to;

in this thread. and great instructions by @Loner T. I'm happy to give it a go if this will indeed help and have the correct sums for those instructions.

Following a suggestion in that thread I did try using bootrec.exe commands via Repair > Command Prompt from a Windows 10 Install USB. However it would not allow the Y (yes) selection at the end after /rebuildBCD. Perhaps related to the Fusion Drive, not sure. But didn't work after a reboot and several attempts (also after selecting the C: drive)

If I can provide any further details please ask. I would very much like to resolve this without a clean install and know how to deal with it if it happens again even doing something as straight forward as an Auto Repair.

Thanks.

You will need to enable read-write access to the Windows partition (not the disk) using Diskpart. Please see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766465(v=ws.10).aspx . You should then be able to rebuildBCD and test. Disk1s5 is WindowsRE. Once the BCD is fixed, the MBR can also be rebuilt.

Thanks for your prompt response.

I have not used Diskpart before. From reading I tried to ensure read-write access was enabled on Disk1s5 (Volume 1 Partition5) by trying;

diskpart: list volumes

diskpart: select volume 1

diskpart: list partitions

diskpart: select partition 5

diskpart: attributes partition clear readonly

which does not seem possible to use the attributes command on a partition? only on a volume or disk, as it just showed the possible uses.

I checked the current attributes for the volume 1:

diskpart: attributes volume

and this indicated the it was already READONLY: NO. which seems to indicate it is already read-write?

I am not sure quite how to ensure I enable read-write on the Disk1s5 as it is if you could provide any guidance.

I assume once it is confirmed it is read-wrtie access, then I just repeat the bootrec commands?

Thanks again for your help.

Still unable to find a way to resolve the issues trying to fix it via bootrec and diskpart. This is the message I get each time:

User uploaded file

The only other thing I have found googling is a potential issue when running these commands from an USB stick Windows Install for instance here.

As I am using an iMac 27 Inch and had issues previously with trying to install W7 and the comments on running the Auto Repair from a USB install even causing the issue, perhaps it has some bearing. I also created the USB W10 Install used for booting & repair on an older iMac 2007 on an USB 2.0 stick.

But I am fishing and not really sure how to proceed and find other ways to achieve this. Perhaps just the wrong commands etc.

Continuing to try and find a way to rebuild the BCD I am finding no way currently to get the bootrec /rebuildbcd to work (see image in my last post) and from looking at the diskpart reports it doesn't appear that it is read-only.

As noted in my last post I have read the Microsoft page linked and also googled around for other possible solutions to get it/rebuildbcd to work notably these threads;

Problem recreating BCD on Windows 7 64bit - The requested system device cannot be found

Tried all potential solutions on this thread with no joy so far. It is noted there about possible issue trying to run /rebuildbcd from USB.

Fixing the Windows Bootloader via the setup DVD

Noted there in the comments also about not running from USB but disk only. I gets stuck at;

User uploaded file

Tried a possibled fix in the other thread but still not working.

And to try and make a UEFI Bootable W10 Install/ Recovery USB as it was one possible solution;

UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows

Lastly I tried creating a boot-repair-disk bootable USB (GPT/UEFI) USB from the open source app and was able to select and run it (in failsafe mode) and it ran successfully. However it did not enable the Windows disk selection, which is still showing as EFIBoot on alt boot.

Currently I am at a lose as what to try next. As it is a iMac 27 Inch (Late 2013) I have no optical drive to burn and use a DVD Install way. I can't use remote CD when booting into Bootcamp/ Windows.

Further detail from Windows Install/Repair & Diskpart which I believe shows the volume is not readonly and the disks/ volumes including Bootcamp (three disks being Fusion Drive SSD/ HHD & USB Install) if it helps;

1. What started the issue. Running the Repair Start-upfrom Windows 10 on Bootcamp on boot. After this and rebooted the following error in 2.

2. Error on selecting EFI Boot (was Windows) on alt boot.

3. Diskpart result for list disk and detail disk for disk 0 (Fusion Drive SSD)

4. Disklist result for disk 1 (inc.Bootcamp) detail;

5. Dispart detail result for disk 1 volume 1 (Bootcamp) appears to show not readonly;

if there is any other details/ information. or any obvious mistakes in what I've tried to fix this, which may help provide some suggestion please let me know.

Finally found a solution and am now able to boot once more to Bootcamp Windows 10.

Continuing to research I found this thread;

How can I repair the Windows 8 EFI Bootloader?

and specifically this postwhich provided instructions on recreating the BCD store. Once completed via Command Prompt with the Windows 10 Install USB, the drive showed up as Windows once again on alt boot and booted into Windows 10. The instructions were for Windows 8 but worked for the newer version.

The final instruction included for en-gb localisation (it says it defaults to US English otherwise) so you may need to adjust that for other languages.

Given the issues involved I would advise against running the Automatic Repair feature of the Windows 10 Install if using USB Media as it appears to create this issue and using a USB install media may well prevent the more routine use of bootrec /rebuildbcd to resolve the issue. It seems it works via DVD media.
