Closing tabs in Safari freezes Macbook

I've had a problem with Safari. I'm running El Capitan on a Macbook Pro 15" mid-2014. I noticed this problem on Yosemite as well, though. It hasn't happened a whole lot of times but TWICE today, so it's getting annoying. When I close a tab in Safari it freezes the browser and the entire Mac. Sometimes I can move the cursor but other times even that is frozen. Then I have to wait maybe 15-20-25 seconds before it unfreezes. I think it mostly happens on youtube actually. Is this something you're familiar with? Also, after it unfreezes my Mac runs slower, like laggy, so I have to restart.

Hope you can help.

There's a substantial group of people with a 2014 mac (including me) that have a particular freeze that sounds like the one you're having. I won't list it again here of it as it's repeated throughout the other thread you commented in and this one, but a lot of those affected have gone into quite a bit of detail to document and share what causes the freeze and symptoms. It won't help you fix it, sorry, but can confirm you're one of those affected and help sort through the torrent of comments on freezes in Safari that aren't related to each other.

Anyone still seeing this issue? I have spoken with Apple about the problem. I don't have verbal confirmation that the crashing has been remedied, but, based on my experience since updating to 10.11.6 and the the amount of time I've spent with YouTube in the past few of weeks, I believe it has. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted.

The inactivity in this thread has me thinking others haven't seen the issue in a while.

Adam, I'm Fernando. I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro with OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 and I have the same issue related on this thread, my MacBook Pro locks up in Safari closing tabs with Youtube. After 2 months of the updating OS X El Capitan, when you close tabs with Youtube in safari, your computer have no freezings anymore???

If you has no freezing anymore I'm thinking seriously about upgrade to macOS sierra, because the problem doesn't appear again.

Thanks!!!!!

Hi Fernando. I would very much suggest that you abandon Yosemite. Not many people here mentioned having an issue on Yosemite, but for the short time I had the mid-2014 with Yosemite, I did see the problem crop up. I just didn't have any idea what the issue was at that point. The problem continued through El Capitan. It didn't go away until the Safari Technology Preview just previous to the most current release a few months ago. I don't have any freezes anymore its YouTube and Safari Technology Preview. From what I've heard, the problem was corrected in the regular version of Safari also.

I'm not on Sierra yet (mostly due to complaints about 4k external monitor resolution issues).

Hi Adam!!!. I have upgraded to El Capitan in december 2015, having a fresh installation, but the issue of the locks up on safari in Youtube was more frequent, 5 times per day (in yosemite was 1 time per 15 or 20 days). Therefore I have downgraded to yosemite.

In yosemite i have updated the safari to the actual version (10.0) and the locks up on safari in Youtube is more frequent, two or three times per day, in the prior versions of safari (9.1.3) I had freezings 1 time per 15 days.
