Using Magic Mouse 2 with Yosemite doesn't work...

So I bought the MM2 yesterday and using it with Yosemite (10.10.5). I noticed in the Mouse Preferences that all the features available with the original Magic Mouse are gone. See pics below. One is the MM and the other MM2.

Am I missing something here or is the MM2 only capable of working with El Capitan?

Sadly, Apple does state it is compatible onky with El Capitan, which I beleive is very short sighted.

The scroll reversal happened to the Microsoft mouse I was using, even when the Magic Mouse 2 is not paired or active. I could not figure out how to reverse it as there is no access to the scroll direction in the system preferences anywhere. I have resorted to another app that allows control of the scroll direction. I think there is something that can be done as well vis the terminal window, but I've forgotten how to do that.

I presume this will all go away with an upgrade to El Capitan.

Well then. I guess the MM2 goes back into the box until we get El Capitan then.

Thankfully, I convinced them to let me keep the regular Magic Mouse until this gets fixed. 😀

Kind of sad they are leaving people out there in a lurch since their site no longer sells the Magic Mouse. You'll have to find it out in the wild and hope they don't dry up too soon.

Thanks for the response.

Hello Talderon,

I'm not sure you are correct about not selling the 'Magic Mouse'. I have seen nothing to suggest that. It is certainly freely available here in the UK.

Your profile says you use Yosemite, so upgrading to 10.11.1 is a simple matter ... from which point your new equipment should work.

I do agree that this was a previouly unannounced upgrade, at least in terms of the precise details. It appears that Apple may have considered that the advice on the boxes that the mouse was for use with 10.11.1 was enough. I would tend to disagree but my influence is miniscule, if anything at all. 😀

Both the MM2 and TrackPad 2 both are only compatible with Bluetooth 4.0. You will get the gesture problems as well on any other bluetooth version, so basically it will only function as a regular mouse (TP2 also functions like a regular mouse).

So if your Mac does not have Bluetooth 4.0, you can go buy a BT Dongle. Just make sure it's 4.0.

Go to apple.com/feedback. This is a technical forum where we users attempt to help each other through established repair patterns. Apple only has employees as "moderators" to ensure we play by the rules. apple.com/feedback is where Apple listens. Perhaps with enough reports of "please make it work" Apple will assist.

In complete agreement with you. It's a tiny bit of work to make these peripherals compatible with OS X 10.9-10.10-10.11. This is something new for Apple, and it's a huge fail. Speaks to lack of customer focus. Also, people aren't upgrading to 10.11 for the very same reason we now can't upgrade our hardware -- the new products aren't working and playing with others reliably out of the box. So now, in addition to having to be wary when upgrading my OS so as not to use functionality or third party compatibility, I now have to apply the same cautiousness to peripherals. Another step backwards. Would the cost to make these products fully functional with at least Yosemite have been that great?

Just wanted to say thank you - after multiple help searches and spending half my day yesterday trying to make my magic Mouse 2 work with a Macbook Pro my employer recently provided, this has the answer. Interestingly, the bluetooth connected and the magic Mouse worked fine for clicking and tracking - but no scrolling or other functions. So I guess it's back to using my employer's silly mouse that requires a USB dongle until they decide to upgrade to El Capitan. Annoying on Apple's part for sure - and does anyone know WHY they put the charger input on the bottom so it's impossible to use while charging?

Yes I too have just about had it with apple. Arrogant and uncaring to their customers by releasing beta software and hardware as finished product and replacing good operating systems with trash (IMO). Any recent upgrade to OS X means headaches so bad its not worth it anymore. Stick with the old until it doesn't work anymore and throw it away I guess. Upgrading the iPhone is now as useful as throwing your phone away. The finally made iTunes so useless for me that I retired all my apple TV's and replaced them with ROKU boxes. Thank god for Plex. Sadly for apple it means Im no longer using iTunes so the loss in sales is significant. Microsoft rubbed off on them and not in a good way. Now a magic mouse that doesn't work as well as any basic mouse. I refuse to upgrade this macbook to whatever the new crap is called as its just not fast enough to run it. Completely uncaring company now. If you don't want to replace your hardware every 2 years they don't want you. I need the 17" macbook for the size but they don't make it anymore. Why did I pay for a premium mouse when a $10 mouse is more useful. They got me again. Tic Tok Apple.
