Brand New iMac 4K Performing Slow

Hi all!

few days ago I bought the Newly released iMac 4K, the main version without changes in hardware.

When I started using it I realised that it was performing quite slow, but it did not bothered much as I though that because it was brand new it might need it to 'warm up' a little bit.

Now , after 3 days still the same, slower than my Macbook Air mid 2012!

I migrate information from my Time Machine copy, and I connected my 8TB of external data as well. It was performing even more slow than before, but (again) I though it might be the indexing of 8TB in the spotlight... now that's done and still performing slow in things like:

- moving windows

- opening windonws

- opening apps

-typing in safari

- opening safari taps.

- responding in general.

Shall I wait a bit more???

Im quite frustrated as is a brand new item, any help much appreciated.

regards

Hi -- My wife insisted on buying a new i Mac. We came home, very excited to use the new migthy Mac last night. My wife is now just so upset because it takes roughly 3 - 5 minutes to download anything. What gives? We have 5 bars. My PC downloads a whole movie practically in the time it takes her brand new mac -- literally one day old -- to open the New York Times front page. The thing of it is, we paid about 3 times what a comparable PC would have cost for an i mac. It's nice to see that there are at least others who have experience this problem. We are not very techy. There is loads of advice on downloads and preference adjustments. I think we'll just return the thing tomorrow. We threw away the box. Does that matter? Mac just lost a new subscriber. By the way, I am posting this from my PC. The $1,500 Mac is too slow to get on this page. Hahaha. Sniff....

Bought mine in October last year basic spec. 4K 21.5" model and like others find it the worst Mac Ive ever owned. Terribly slow to the point its almost unuseable and I resort to my three year old Macbook Pro (which also has a spinning disk).

Apple frankly should have known better they must test products and why put a state of the art screen with inferior internal hardware Im so pis**d off I will not buy another iMac in the future.

What speed is your hard drive in your MBP?

If you have the basic spec 21.5" iMac, I am assuming you have the stock hard drive. If so, it is a 5400 RPM which makes it about 30% slower than the 7200 rpm hard drives in 27" models. I bought a Mini once with a 5400 drive and sold it three months later at a loss because it was way too slow for me.

I can positively say that that is the worst device from Apple, it is a 4K 21 inch display with huge graphics processing crammed with 2000 5400 RPM hard drive.

When i click right-click to correct a spelling in a browser I the see the color spin wheel...

I want to throw it in the trash because I gets on my nerve. my iMac late 2013 was way faster because the display was not so graphically demanding.

Well, if you have the 5400 rpm drive, it is about 33% slower than a stock 7400 rpm (on 27" models) which makes it very slow. I discarded it immediately replacing it with an SSD in my Macbook Pro. Can't do that easily (or at all) on the new 21", so I would not buy a 21" with the default drive, but upgrade it during the order process. If you've had it for less than 2 weeks, you can take advantage of the return option and then order one with a faster drive.
