dictation not working on MacBook Air after update to El Capitan. How do I fix?

After updating my MacBook Air to El Capitan, the dictation function does not work. I have tried to turn dictation off, then on, but doesn't correct problem. I also have turned off enhanced dictation, but does not correct problem either. Any other options?

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Hi there,

I've just upgraded to Mountain Lion in order to get Dictation working for a book I'm working on. When it didn't go, I tried every fix I could find online, with no change.

I followed your instructions for getting Console to report on the problem, here is the relevant log:

Any ideas?

Looking at this I remember that I've told my Little Snitch network monitor to block any Google Update traffic - this wouldn't affect the Dictation app would it?

I tried disabling Little Snitch, but the problem remained. I don't have any antivirus running.

My internal microphone records audio in other apps. The dictation microphone selector is set to internal mic. The voice level moves the microphone indicator level when in the Dictation setup screen.

Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I am having a similar problem on my iMac. I hear the tone, but nothing happens. Here is what the console reports...

Restarted and dictation started working agin. Which is typical. After about 20 min, it wouldn't. Here is the log:

I have a similar problem. Running MacBook Pro 13" Retina (i7 , mid 2014) with El Capitan 10.11.1 and Safari 9.0.1.

With Dictation on and the microphone window visible and running I can not get any text to print. However, after some experimentation, I've discovered that many system commands (not all) will work. E.g., "Show commands", "Select all", "Copy that", "Paste that", etc. work as expected. But nothng I do can get normal text to show up.

This problem occurs to me since the upgrade to El Capitan on the newest MacBook Pro 13.
In the beginning it needed "only" a reboot. Now nor this could help.

I tried everything, disabling and reenabling every option in system preferences. Unuseful. I tried closing apps. Nothing.
Simply, it's completely not working.

The microphone appears, but as I talk nothing happens, like the input doesn't arrive (it don't freeze). Also checking on the menu bar volume icon with the alt+click the internal microphone for the input doesn't work. The mic works good with all other apps.

I think that this is a considerable issue for the famous Mac productivity and efficiency, so - dear Apple engineers - be seriously quick in checking it.

Same happening to me still. El Capitan 10.11.4 and Safari 9.1 Starting dictation (either fn fn or from Edit menu) gets that sound effect, but the microphone icon does not pop up. Microphone works in all other regards, and shows sound on the Dictation settings screen. I've turned dictation on and off, enhanced on and off, changed languages and back, etc. Nothing consistently works. When I restart it'll work again for a bit, but always just goes away.
