iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Hi I have OSX 10.11.1 running and I updated my iTunes to 12.3.1. Now all I get is the spinning beach ball when i try to start iTunes. I did a force quit and rebooted but the same thing is happening. I have a huge music library so I thought maybe it was doing some kind of update by after a half hour iTunes is still got the spinning beach ball. Any help would be appreciated.

Tried the terminal delete then reinstall. No real difference. Still get the spinning ball when I do many actions; % CPU up to 248% ⚠ at one point, though more often around 100%+ when doing anything.

While iTunes had improved somewhat before I reinstalled it, still a long way to go. Doesn't seem any different after the reinstall.

Just now, I tried playing a music video. I can hear it fine, but there was no video and the ball was spinning. Finally, the video appeared in a separate space after a minute or more.

Argh!

I deleted iTunes again via the Terminal. Used the link you gave to download and install iTunes.

At first when I checked the iTunes version in Applications folder, I mentally groaned: it read 12.3.1. But when I actually went to iTunes and checked "About iTunes," the version was 12.3.0.44. (When I restarted the computer, the app read as 12.3.)

In general, it seems to work. Every action is about as fast as before the update. A few spinning balls, but mostly short-lived.

I tried videos, music videos, movies. Everything there seemed okay. But I ran across a new glitch with music files: when I play a song in the main list or in a play list, when the song is over, iTunes skips to a random song. Urg. Not as annoying as the spinning balls and freezes, but yet another issue to deal with that I did not have before all this started earlier this week.

This is the first iTunes update ever since the early days that caused iTunes to be virtually unusable. Certainly will think long and hard on future updates for iTunes; once burned, twice shy.

Additional note after install of 12.3.0.44:

Song skipping in main list and in playlists persists. I ran permissions repair via OnyX — twice — and restarted the computer — twice — but this glitch has not changed. OnyX showed permissions issues w/ iTunes and repaired them, but that made no difference in resolving this new problem. Wotta pain.

Re: song skips: oops! Egg on face. Turns out the song skipping was not a glitch. After running a ton of maintenance via OnyX, I finally noticed that the random play icon was highlighted in the play time section at the top. Don't know how that got clicked, but vastly relieved to know that things are actually back to relative normal w/ iTunes 12.3.0.44. Sorry. Chalk it up to way too many hours spent trying to deal with this stupid situation.

When sending feedback to Apple - bug report - also give them the size of your Itunes library - and what is in it.

For example - I have 300 songs in 1.2GB -- never had a problem opening Itunes. If I were a beta-tester would say no problem.

It would be very unusual for a software developer to have access to the size of Itunes collections/data mentioned by users here.

It may be that Itunes is trying to rebuild something - and you may be stuck in the Twilight zone of -- the bigger the data base the longer it takes -- and every-time you interrupt it it makes it worse.

I decided to try and uninstall iTunes 12.3.1 and revert back to 12.3 however I'm not good at using terminal so I used an application called AppCleaner to remove iTunes for me.

I downloaded iTunes 12.3 from a link in one of the previous posts.

Well it worked iTunes is back to normal with only slight lag at times. Phew
