iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Hi I have OSX 10.11.1 running and I updated my iTunes to 12.3.1. Now all I get is the spinning beach ball when i try to start iTunes. I did a force quit and rebooted but the same thing is happening. I have a huge music library so I thought maybe it was doing some kind of update by after a half hour iTunes is still got the spinning beach ball. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Which version of Onyx are you using? I waited for a while after installing El Capitan until the developer released the appropriate version (3.1.1), since Onyx goes under the hood and it's very important to get it right.

I'm especially confused by your repairing permissions, which has theoretically become a thing of the past in Mac OS X 10.11.x, and by Onyx showing issues with iTunes permissions. In all my years of using Onyx, I've never had such an app-specific message. Only a permissions repair with the Disk Utility gave details.

Still, if it worked for you, so much the better. I know that Onyx still has the permissions option and that using it won't do any harm.

Using Onyx 3.1.2, updated for El Cap.

As I said in my post, the permissions repairs Onyx dealt w/ may well be irrelevant to any issues we're having.

As you know, Apple isn't offering permissions repairs as an option, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to have Onyx try a hand. And all I know is that it said there were "problems" with various iTunes components which it "repaired." I never used Onyx in the past to deal w/ permissions given Disk Utility, so can't comment on how Onyx dealt w/ this in the past. It gave details for me this time, anyway.

Had the same problem after updating to El Capitan, but only on the IMac of my wife not on the MacBook Pro, both early 2011.

after reverting all this threads I had fear to loose everything, finally I found the following which worked perfectly without loosing anything.

This this will help you too!!!!

Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it

~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Have success

I've also been having issues with iTunes under El Capitan. Spinning wheel at launch, then if i dare to click on anything the spinning wheel returns. Making it impossible to navigate playlists or anything useful.

I've waited over a month for an update but nothing so I decided to downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes to see if that would solve my issues (as suggested on a number of posts here). Using Appzapper I did just that (keeping my iTunes music folder with the playlists, files etc). All is well again.

Wow. After hours - days - of iTunes torture, this worked. The crucial difference was the link to the 12.3.0 download. 12.3.1 doesn't work. Thank you so much, especially for the download link that Apple seemingly doesn't make available.

Not that iTunes 12 isn't a steaming pile of crap. Now, to switch tracks it takes about 15 seconds after clicking. But it works, or should I say, "it works". About Yosemite level performance with my 2TB library - approx 8000 albums, hundreds of movies, a sizeable portion of it bought from Apple. A lot of (purchased) high bit-rate music.

The only reason I have iTunes 12 on any computer is because I have one that's too recent to work with earlier versions, and I bought an iPhone 6S, which won't sync with 11.4. Argggh. The other computers in my life use 11.4, which handles the library very well - except for a pause when creating new playlists. 12 is a downgrade, an inexplicably lame piece of software, that one presumes was focused on Apple Music and revenue - on Apple, no its users. A sad statement on the company's priorities today.

Yes think so - I'm just trying that now and it seems to have worked. Didn't bother with Terminal stuff - just did get info on the app and changed everyone permissions to Read and write and then chucked iTunes in trash. The installed the 12.3. Looks good - phew the update was a nightmare! Still got a very slight amount of beachball but tons better than the 12.3.1.23 which got stuck for up to a minute or more.
