Xcode update stuck at waiting

This got 7.3.1 working for me:

Everything is much more simple... Do not cancel anything, open AppStore, then click on the "Store" in the top-left menu and choose the following option - "Check for Unfinished Downloads...". Enter your Apple ID and password and you everything will be up and running.

The reason is that XCode does require additional confirmation before download.

Your cache may be corrupted. You can try to download again by deleting the Xcode file in ~/Library/Caches.

I'm more familiar with the Terminal, if you are too, you can use these commands:

cd ~/Library/Caches ls -la | grep Xcode ls | grep Xcode | xargs rm -rf

The first entry just navigates to the cache directory. The second just verifies that there is an Xcode cache file. You want to make sure there's only one before performing the next command, which pipes that file/directory name into a remove statement.

My X-Code update was stuck on "waiting" -- I checked the store menu for unfinished updates and this required me to sign in -- perhaps this was because I had just finished an update of iTunes and a Yosemite security update -- I signed in and the X-Code download began again immediately...I guess it was just waiting for the sign in. Give it a try.

Sorry -- in the above message I should have said an El Capitan update, not a Yosemite update -- DUH! And, now the update has paused itself again after updating for about a half hour or more -- still not complete, but I'll just wait.

This is very true - whatever other people are doing to fix the problem it just happens to coincide with the brief period where the penguins aren't busy. I've found that it's just pot luck. If you don't want to get stuck in the queue then don't download and install straight after release. The penguins are super busy - just leave it for a few days.

An update to my update - the latest update of X-Code has installed after many pauses and an error message that said it couldn't be installed and to try again. So, the moral of the story seems to be that you should have patience, don't believe everything you read, check after a few hours/days, and success just might be yours -- and I'm not really using it anyway, so what's the problem?

This was the only way that I found to get Xcode to update / download. Seems the previous application bundle wouldn't allow the update to pass through to the App Store to begin updating.. w.e at least it worked lol

Worked perfectly. Tried for several times, cleared the cache of the app store, restarted, waited for an hour. Nothing... Then after confirming the deletion, the update started immediately. thanks!

This worked for me too—thank you DH!—but you need to keep AppStore running while you delete Xcode. On my first attempt, I first quit the AppStore, then deleted Xcode, and relaunched AppStore. In that attempt it didn't show that I had an Xcode update. So, quitting the AppStore, restoring Xcode from trash, relaunching AppStore again showed me the Xcode update, again stuck at Waiting. This time, I deleted Xcode while AppStore was running, and it automatically took off. FWIW, this is for Xcode 8.

I put the Xcode from the Application folder into the trash, then the download started. I quickly pulled it back out of the trash and restored it to the original location (remembering I don't want to reinstall all of my credentials).

I had the same problem with Updating Xcode 8.1, and what I have done to fix this is:

1) Go to https://developer.apple.com/download/

2) Launch app in the AppStore after press Download button

And this will refresh AppStore status from waiting.. to downloading..

This problem even came back on a brand new latest model MacBook Pro. Please, please – please(!) fix this . I've had this for years now. It seems related to my account ID, although that's probably impossible...

I just went into the applications folder and renamed xcode to xcode.old and the download started immediately.

This worked for me as well for 8.3.1

I have this problem when trying to update from Xcode 8.2.1 to Xcode 8.3.3 on macOS Sierra 10.12.5.
