iOS 9: Duplicated icons

Hello everyone.

Since iOS 9 is out, everytime (or almost everytime) I update an app I'm left with a duplicated "ghost" icon of the app in question.

This morning for example I updated Facebook, Messenger, iMovie and a few other apps...

And as you can see from the screenshot below, each of the above mentioned apps has that ghost/greyed out effect.

Basically when I update an app, I'm left with two icons: a normal one, that works (you can't see that on the screenshot, it's on another page of the springboard), and a ghost/greyed duplicate that doesn't work.

To fix this, I need to reset home screen layout, and the problem goes away.

It's still a bit annoying though.

This never happened in the past, it's only happening since I installed iOS 9.

At the beginning I thought that it could have been a bug of the new operating system, but it's still happening even with 9.1...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Really? It seems there is a problem with your Apple-ID. You should contact Apple support and tell them.

Hardware should not be the problem because you have already the third device.

Thanks, you are great. I have talked also to Apple support in my country. They told me, that maybe there is something wrong with the Apple-ID. We should test this by creating a new Appe-ID (only for tests) on your phone, downloading some apps and look, if this bug has gone. Of course this cannot be the final solution because of all the purchases we have made.

I have 2 questions:

1. Are you sorting your apps alphabetically? I do. I use the "reset home screen" option in Settings-Reset.

2. I realized that not all my apps are being duplicated. I mean, on my second page, last line I have "ElTenedor" app. Apps before this one (we can say apps starting from A to E) are not being duplicated when I updated them. The rest of the apps after "ElTenedor" (from E to Z) are being duplicated when they are updated. Have you detected a similar situation? As you can see on my screenshot, duplicated icons always start after "ElTenedor" app.

1. Yes, I do. The same way. :-)

2. I noticed, that only some apps on the last page of the springboard are duplicated, mostly WhatsApp or YouTube. Furthermore apps on the other pages do not create a duplicated icon but change there position in the springboard pages, e.g. Shazam went from page 2 to 3 or eBay went from top to the bottom of page 2. If restart the phone, all is back in right position without resetting home screen. But all in all I do not think, it is an alphabetical issue.

3. Yes, you are right. If download an app, it is placed correctly at the end of the springboard. I have done this for test purposes with some apps.

well, I think I finally found the root problem. In my case, the problem appears when using the "home screen reset" option. Let me explain how I did it.

I had 12 updates. I updated 1 (Pokemon). As usual, ghost/duplicated icon appeared next to the "ElTenedor" app. The different thing I did this time is I moved the ghost/duplicated Pokemon icon to the last position of the first page, just next tot the Settings icon. I reorganized the icons manually to cover the hole the Pokemon ghost left and restarted the phone. After that, the rest of the updates where fine and no duplicated icons appeared. I was testing with new app updates and everything was good.

After that, I had curiosity and I did again a "reset home screen layout". Wit the next app update appeared again the duplicated icon. So I did the same manual process and everything was fine again.

Definitively, there is a bug with the "reset home screen layout".

PS: I want to blame to Apple and all the Apple Senior Advisors. I couldn't contact a real engineer about my issue, never. Vittoria Giaccio (mgiaccio@apple.com) another Apple Senior Advisor who forgot my emails and didn't answer anymore. Thanks.

That is a very interesting thing. Have you told this to Apple? However a friend of mine also uses this "home screen reset" function, but does not have this issue. Very curious!

How will you continue?

Today I updated some apps and what shall I say, the issue seems to have gone. No more duplicated or reordered icons. So you were right! But this workaround cannot be the deal!!!

It is a mess, that customers have to find a solution for this issue! You arrogant Apple software engineers - go home, you f u c k e d up!
