iOS 9: Duplicated icons

Hello everyone.

Since iOS 9 is out, everytime (or almost everytime) I update an app I'm left with a duplicated "ghost" icon of the app in question.

This morning for example I updated Facebook, Messenger, iMovie and a few other apps...

And as you can see from the screenshot below, each of the above mentioned apps has that ghost/greyed out effect.

Basically when I update an app, I'm left with two icons: a normal one, that works (you can't see that on the screenshot, it's on another page of the springboard), and a ghost/greyed duplicate that doesn't work.

To fix this, I need to reset home screen layout, and the problem goes away.

It's still a bit annoying though.

This never happened in the past, it's only happening since I installed iOS 9.

At the beginning I thought that it could have been a bug of the new operating system, but it's still happening even with 9.1...

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. I think there will be no fix soon, because not many users seem to be affected. As I told you, a friend of mine uses also this reset home screen function to reorder the apps alphabetically. He does not have any duplicated oder reordered icons.

I wrote your last mentioned Senior advisor, but still did not get any response. I think, it is pointless.

By the way after doing your workaround, I updated to iOS 10. After this I used home screen reset and there were no duplicated icons in the future. We will see, how long it works.

PS: I am interested, how you found out about your described workaround? Luck?

Yes, my workaround was totally luck after trying 100 different things.

Weird, you don't have duplicated icons with iOS 10 and using home screen reset.

Let's continue testing.

Exactly the same issue here.

iPhone 6 Plus 64GB, IOS 10 (problem occurs since IOS 9, I think).

I have over 100 apps installed on my iPhone.

Shame on you, Apple.

Sad to hear, that you will give up. But you are right, it seems senseless. Very funny, that you found out this workaround by luck. Maybe, this is already sensational? Congratulation, you have a better knowledge than Apple software engineers! Cheers! ✅ 😉

After doing some more app updates over the last weeks I can confirm, that until today the bug has gone, despite using home screen reset function. Really weird!

How have you been? Device still buggy?

@appleuser9371, yes, still buggy, I don't user the reset screen layout anymore.

iPhone X with iOS 11.1.2. This is still an issue. Reseting my home screen layout or a power cycle will clear it out, but I shouldn't have to do either.
