cleaning the fan with a air duster spray?

Will thoese air duster sprays work to clean the fan area?

EMac 1.0 GHZ G4, Mac OS X (10.4.8), green ipod mini 4gb, ipod video black 30gb

Hello Pokemonfan,

Yes. They will work. They also risk blowing the dirt further inside the computer. There is also a risk of spraying liquid inside too - An even worse scenario!!!

A vacuum cleaner has been suggested as one way to get rid of the dust. Taking all the usual anti-static precautions along the way.

Taking the thing apart is another - This should NOT be attempted unless you are 100% confident in your abilities here. There are some pretty big voltages kicking around inside an eMac.

As Ian has already noted, canned air runs a real risk of blowing gunk back into the chassis, and if you tilt the can you can send a shot of the propellent in as well. Worst case, the gunk could be slightly conductive and cause shorting within the chassis. If you're intent on using canned air, keep the car upright, aim it at the sides of the rear exhaust vents at an angle towards the rear, and do it with the eMac turned on so that the fan is running and providing some airflow pressure outwards.
