iTunes slow

Since downloading the latest update to iTunes, 12.3.1, iTunes has been abysmally slow with lots of spinning beachballs. I have a late 2014 mini with SSD and 16G of memory. The previous version of iTunes was very fast with anything I tried to do.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I'm streaming a bought video from iCloud and sometimes the movie is freezing and then this message pops up in the console.

26.10.15 11:30:36,550 iTunes[484]: <<<< FigByteStream >>>> FigByteStreamStatsLogOneRead: ByteStream read of 56858 bytes @ 967131672 took 0.966991 sec. to complete, 19 reads >= 0.5 sec.

Then it takes around a minute then the traffics spikes up to 10Mbyte/s and the movie goes on.

Now it is running normal.

Traffic shows a spike to 4Mbyte/s then goes down back and movie is still running without problems.

Now after around 1 minute it stucks again with the console message:

26.10.15 11:35:30,373 iTunes[484]: <<<< FigByteStream >>>> FigByteStreamStatsLogOneRead: ByteStream read of 19683 bytes @ 1118620262 took 2.405095 secs. to complete, 12 reads >= 1 sec..

Now I see messages like

26.10.15 11:36:06,000 kernel[0]: Limiting closed port RST response from 426 to 250 packets per second

Now it looks like it is running stable.

I can only assume that it is an iCloud issue.

Compared to other services like Amazon Prime or Netflix I have a lot of problems with AppleTV, iMac and iCloud streaming.

Now it stucks again....

26.10.15 11:48:49,677 iTunes[484]: <<<< FigByteStream >>>> FigByteStreamStatsLogOneRead: ByteStream read of 60793 bytes @ 1641827495 took 2.133082 secs. to complete, 13 reads >= 1 sec.

I was very patient over the last year but I'm not really happy with the iCloud streaming service from Apple.

Especially that I can't look rental movies I bought on iMac on AppleTV.

It's time for a change...

Same problem, 10 second spin whenever editing in iTunes 12.3.1. My Library is on an external WD drive. I get a lot of console activity from the SmartWareDriveService which I assume is the drive's software. Here is my console and expanded report:

well, I just tried something else and seemed to clear up problem...in preferences, I chose Reset for iTunes media location, and then went in again and put Change to put it back to where it was supposed to be (I keep on external drive).Note after hitting Reset, I did NOT choose option to organize since the reset initially changes the location. But, when I clicked on Change with the correct location, I did choose to organize (it's a prompt that comes up after your have selected Reset and Change)..that did some kind of rebuild/consolidation and working just fine again now...

Oct 27, 2015 8:05 AM in response to Raymond Beauchesne

Same for me, no change after resetting location. I have Activity Monitor running with the iTunes "process" window activated and I can see that when I attempt to make an edit in iTunes (simply activating a song title and then clicking away - causing the pinwheel) the %CPU jumps to 100.29% and then back down afterward. It essentially takes over all available ram and hangs for 10 seconds. Here's a new "event" only jumped to 99.85%!

Sorry...I had written an update but didn't appear (probably my error)...in any case...reset only worked temporarily...which is interesting...but went back to old behavior shortly after. I have since been on phone with apple...so far no luck..last thing we tried was reload of El Capitan so could get fresh version of iTunes...didn't help either...so still scratching head....
