MS Word for Mac does not yet support Arabic. Every other app should work ok: TextEdit, Pages, Mellel, Nisus, LibraOffice, etc. It is best to use one of them instead.
I assume you understand how to add an Arabic keyboard via system prefs/keyboard/input sources?
There is a workaround for Word for Mac which some find useful: Create an arabic document in Windows Word, Word Online, or iOS Word and import it into your Mac as a template. This can then sometimes be used to do correct arabic.

Thanks for the clarifications. Much appreciated.
Tom, does that apply to the new Office 2016, too?

Word for Mac 2016 can finally connect arabic letters, but is still missing the necessary cursor and direction controls.
