Why is the Ipad Air 2 screen replacement cost so high?

I have an Ipad Air 2 16 GB Wifi only with a cracked screen. The ipad is still under the limited 1 year warranty, but the warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. I didn't purchase the applecare program because I bought the ipad from a friend. Now that the ipad Air 2 screen is cracked, but the ipad works perfectly otherwise. I can't afford the replacement cost. Is there a way to reduce the cost of the replacement screen, so I don't have to end up paying $500 + $379 all together for an ipad. The ipad is amazing, but I believe its fragile and the cost to replace it is very high. I love Apple products and will continue to buy Apple products, but this time I feel that I am at a loss.

iPad Air, iOS 9.0.1, 16 GB wifi

That's the price of the full out of warranty replacement unit - you give up your broken device, pay that fee and get a factory refurbished unit in exchange (refurbs are like new devices with actual new displays and new battery). And with regard to your other question, no, the prices for screen replacement and out of warranty replacement are set by Apple and are not negotiable.
