Apple TV (4th Gen) won't play iTunes content from library

Is anyone else seeing this behavior? My new gen4 aTV won't play some movies from my library - it says "this content cannot be played because it's format is not compatible with this device", but it plays fine on my Mac and my gen III aTVs whether I stream it or airplay it. The gen IV won't even let me airplay it which seems really crazy. What's going on? Otherwise I'm loving this box, but this is insane.

We may not be talking about the same function per the TV app in iOS. In the old Video app, it allowed you to connect to your iTunes library on a desktop/laptop and stream both ripped video files and video files purchased through iTunes. In the new TV app, it appears to only support streaming of iTunes purchases. Ripped files don't appear as playable unless you actually copy the file directly onto your iPad.

That's not what I'm finding. Here's a view of the TV app on my iPad. It shows the 2 computers (iTunes Libraries):

User uploaded file

If I then select one of the computers shown, I then see the recorded shows in that computer's iTunes Library:

User uploaded file

I have not copied these videos onto the iPad; they play (stream) from the computer.

I don't seem to have a problem so far with playing movies from my media server, but I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed with this latest AppleTV.

The GUI for files in a local library is horrible and you can't use Siri to do a search.

Not to mention that it does not support 4K out.

I love Apple products as a rule and have one or two of most, but this one ***** and is a complete waste of money. Not at all an improvement over Gen 3

I loaded Plex and purchased the Amazon Fire TV (This has 4K out) and plan on using Plex so I can have my local movies in an arranged fashion, like gatefold, and be able to do search or see most recent movies.

It took a long time from Gen 3 to this latest release - Bad, Bad, Bad

hey everyone I have another question but not quite on this topic but seeing how you guys seem very familiar with ripping movies and tv shows I'll give it a go. I have some tv shows that have a lot of seasons such as Girlfriends, Joey, Cosby Show, Designing Women just to name a few that have closed captioning but not subtitles. My partner is from Brazil and so English is not his first language. We like to use subtitles so he doesn't miss anything and I've gotten used to having them now so when we watch something without the subtitles it's pretty weird. Is there a program out there that will give me ripped versions that include the closed captioning? I can't seem to find an answer on my own.

MacX DVD Ripper Pro supports subtitles. Click on the Edit button (with scissors icon) in the main menu when you have a disc loaded, and that should bring up a screen that has Subtitle as one of the editing options. Click on that and you'll be able to enable the subtitle, choose from available languages on the disc, and position the subtitling. Usually takes some experimenting with settings to get what you want, but it works. Keep in mind that you won't see the subtitling appear in the video preview window of the Subtitle section...only in the ripped file.

You misread my post. The dvd does not have subtitles it only has closed captioning. There is a difference. When you play the dvd the DVD doesn't have subtitles as an option to turn on. You hook up the DVD player using the red, yellow, white AV cords to your tv then the closed captioning will come up giving the text at the bottom of the screen much like subtitles. I Want to know if there is a program that will allow me to rip the DVD and have the CC on the copy?

OK, so getting back to the original topic, it seems that this isn't getting fixed, or at least any time in the near future. For folks struggling (like me) with not being able to watch your large libraries of mp4 files, I'll relate my experience with the Plex app. So far it seems quite good, it's a native aTV4 app running a server on my Mini, and it seems to be playing all of the files the Apple "Computers" app won't, plus it gives me better sorting, rotten tomatoes ratings, search, and some other nice features. I do hope Apple fixes this still, but for now Plex is meeting my needs.
