Apple TV 4: Siri is disabled and greyed out?

Newly purchased Apple TV 4 here.

Siri is not on and I cannot turn it on. It shows as off in the settings, greyed out, and pressing it does nothing.

Pressing the mike button simply brings the search area, ready to accept text from the letter-by-letter "keyboard"

What could lead to that? How can I turn Siri on?

I am in France, and I set up my Apple TV language to English

Thanks,

JD

In fact, I have the same issue. You need to make sure that both language and location match. For example, if you live in France, Siri expects you to work in french, if you live in Germany, language in German... If y do not use the iTunes store, then you can just make sure you are logged out from the iTunes Store and you can set all the settings the way you want. If you use iTunes, it will reset everything next time you log in to either rent or buy anything on the AppleTV.

It kind of ***** as I live in Germany and I speak english. I can do this with the iPhone and iPad, but it seems to have an issue on AppleTV. I have a case open since Saturday with Apple and I am waiting for some feedback.

I assume the issue is because they expect Siri to search the music and movie store in the language it is set on, Apple should be able to resolve this as it has all the language recognition in all languages... hopefully it is in the works.

Finally! Someone that really know where to change the settings if you are in a (yet) supported Siri region.

Annoying with all the mouflon copying text from apple. Sure we have red it. But changing language or region do do not change the gray setting of Siri.

Changing the Location in Setting -> Account -> iTunes and Apps Store -> Location Do help!

Many thanks cmetzbower!

Siri on the ATV 4 is not the same as Siri on an iPhone. Siri on an iPhone uses Apple's servers to parse your requests. That's why it requires a data connection to work. Siri on the ATV 4 gets all its processing done on the device itself. Therefore, there's a lot more work to be done to make sure it understands pronunciation as it can't rely on the huge database that the iPhones do. So, "now" is not likely.

I have gone so far as to call Apple. 1st level could not resolve. Sent ticket to second level. Second level told 1st level to ask the customer this, this and this (this is such bad customer service) instead of just asking me directly. I was asked to check the following....

"The engineers wanted me to check some settings on the Apple TV with you, can you check the settings below on the Apple TV and let me know if you still have an issue?

System language, Region format and iTunes Store account Location must all be set to English to be able to use Siri in English. "

How does one set a location to English? Isn't "English" a Language and not a country?

I live in Germany. I have an ITunes account in Germany because it is where my Visa card is registered. Using US, or UK, is not accepted by ITunes as my Credit card is a GERMAN. So I have no choice to use the German ITunes. If I switch everything to English and UK or US, it works. But then nothing else does basically.

The advertisement states that in 8 countries Siri would work. It did not say I had to be able to speak the local language. I assumed that I could use English as it is available in the US and UK. Why restrict it to only English only English speaking countries?

Anyway, So now Siri is set to German. Siri doesn't understand me because of my terrible accent. My wife, who is German, gets a kick out of me yelling obscenities at Siri in German. Well at least she is happy.

The answer is that Siri works only in the language of the Appstore & iTunes account you are logged in with, and that language also needs to be the language of the Apple TV (and obviously a supported country / language).

This is annoying and different than the behaviour on iOS.

Why is it? My best guess is that Siri on TvOS obviously utilises a lot of App Store / iTunes meta data (actors, etc). This data won't be available in English (for example) if you are logged into the German store. Hence they don't allow this combination as it will break some of the functionality.

Annoying, but I think this may not change.
