Apple TV 4: Siri is disabled and greyed out?

Newly purchased Apple TV 4 here.

Siri is not on and I cannot turn it on. It shows as off in the settings, greyed out, and pressing it does nothing.

Pressing the mike button simply brings the search area, ready to accept text from the letter-by-letter "keyboard"

What could lead to that? How can I turn Siri on?

I am in France, and I set up my Apple TV language to English

Thanks,

JD

One small omission. It has been stated in these posts that Apple TV uses the language where the Apple TV was purchased. “The language setting has to match the region setting for the region you bought your Apple TV in and it has to be a supported region and language per the above information.” In fact that is incorrect. I purchased mine in the UK. My iTunes store account is in France.Had the same problem with the combination of English/France. Changed the combination to French/France and it worked. Siri understands French but only a few english words, probably because they are the same in both languages. Quote from a post above, "System language, Region format and iTunes Store account Location must all be set to English to be able to use Siri in English." or All must be set to the same country for Siri to work.

Silly that you cant use English in France as all the languages must be in the box because it doesn't matter in which country you purchased the Apple TV.

Ahhhh This is such BS Apple!!!
Siri understands English... if you set your language to english, it should work... why do you have to match your region?

I am in Italy I brought my apple TV is from UK, I set it up as:
Apple TV Language: English UK
Region Format: United Kingdom

..Siri is still grayed out.

p.s. I made an Italian Apple ID, and now I can't even get Hulu... and spotify isnt even an app...Italian Tax is 44% so here the Apple TV costs almost double, and you get None of the good features.
I consider it to be a very unwise purchase in Italy. even with a proxy, you sill need an international apple ID.

There is no such thing as an "international Apple ID". In order to have an Apple ID for a particular country, you need to 1) have a valid billing address in that country, 2) have a credit card build to that address or an iTunes card purchased in that country and 3) be physically located in that country at the time of purchase.

Also, using a proxy server to access services such as Hulu from countries where they don't offer service is a violation of Hulu's Terms of Use.

I think your problem may be due to the ATV Siri using local servers linked to the local iTunes. So you cannot mix and match language from one region with iTunes in another. You should try suggesting this at https://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html, but it might not have much effect, since it seems to be fundamental to the design.

By the way complaining here has no effect, since this is just a user forum. Apple doesn't look for improvements here.
