Mail Inbox Sub-folder doesn't show up

I have a 1and1 account set up in the mail app (El Capitan) with SMTP. I recently tried to set up a rule that sends certain emails into a subfolder. Through 1and1's web interface I can see the sub-folder and its corresponding email. However, in the mail app it's not there. If I go to "show account info" it's listed, but trying to view the messages through that brings up nothing. I thought they'd both be in sync. Do I need to manually add this folder in the mail app?

Is it a sub folder under the inbox? Check the sidebar in Mail for the account name. If the account name isn't expanded to show the mailboxes within it, put the cursor over the account name and click on show to expand it. Is the sub folder there?

In the web client, the folder shows up under the Inbox.

In Mail, there's nothing under the Inbox, and the only folders under the account are Deleted Messages, Sent Items, Sent Messages, and Unwanted.

The current version of Mail may not be able to handle subfolders of mailboxes on an IMAP or Exchange server. If you've created such subfolders, I suggest you sign in to the account in a web browser, move the messages out of the subfolders, and then delete the subfolders. Use smart mailboxes to organize your mail.

Having a subfolder under an account in the inbox of Mail is not normal. It could be done in the past (very unusual), but was not an easy task and I don't know that it can still be done.

You should create an IMAP mailbox outside of the Inbox and move the messages there. It would show under the account name in the sidebar then.

You can also create SmartMailboxes to view certain messages in an account.

Fair enough. I created a new mailbox with the Mail app so it shows up under that account and filtered everything I needed into it. On the web app it's reflected under something they call "my folders", which has the "deleted, sent items, etc.".
