Network Preferences Not Responding

I need help. Since upgrading to El Capitan 10.11.1, my System Preferences folder in my main account only opens to Network Preferences. The network preference settings are blank, and system preferences locks up. Wifi works, though. Here's what my screen looks like:

I have tried:

1. Safe mode start up. System preference still freezes. And does't work after safe mode start-up.

2. Deleting com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Still freezes.

3. Starting guest user account. System preferences opens, but network settings are blank, and system preferences freezes in network pane.

4. Checking to see if 32-bit setting is checked. It is not.

5. Running console and pasting the error messages on another support thread. Crickets. No response. Here's the console readout again:

  • 10/31/15 7:24:48.305 PM com.apple.preference.network.remoteservice[2632]: objc[2632]: Class ANPTopLevelService is implemented in both /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/Contents/XPCServices/com.apple .preference.network.remoteservice.xpc/Contents/MacOS/com.apple.preference.networ k.remoteservice and /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Network. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

6. Reinstalling the Operating System. I STILL HAVE THIS PROBLEM.

7. I have an open support case and will be contacting support again. Fun. Not.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services â–¹ Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open. Move the contents of the folder to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and recreate your settings in the Network preference pane.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go â–¹ Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

This worked! I'm relieved! Because the next suggestion from the support desk was wiping my hard drive. I did receive one error message in deleting the system configuration file, which I pasted below. It did not stop me though. I just left that file in tact and deleted everything else that I could delete. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Linc. Please pass this on up the food chain. I think it will save many unnecessary headaches. Cheers!

In case anyone else running "El Capitan" finds this thread, my comment above should be revised as follows.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Right-click or control-click the line and select

Services â–¹ Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder named "SystemConfiguration" should open. Move the contents of that folder to the Trash, except the file with this name:

com.apple.Boot.plist

Leave that file where it is.

You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and test.

If there's no change, restore each of the items you deleted from a backup, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place.

If the problem is resolved, you may need to recreate some of your settings in the Network and Energy Saver preference panes.
